The neighborhood festival of the Sacred Heart in the heart of Salento

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Festival is the annual celebration through which the neighborhood of the same name in Galatone, in the province of Lecce, expresses its devotion. Promoted by the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, the festival unites religious observance with popular, convivial traditions, involving the entire district and the local people who gather around the church and in the squares of the historic center. It is one of those authentic town festivals that capture the soul of Salento, where faith intertwines with great food, live music, and community spirit.
The core of the festival remains devotional: solemn masses, moments of Eucharistic adoration, and above all the procession of the Sacred Heart, which winds through the town streets accompanied by the faithful and a brass band. Surrounding these religious events is a program of secular activities that transforms the neighborhood into a bustling village for a few days, complete with traditional illuminations, market stalls, and the warm atmosphere of Salento summer evenings.
Among the most anticipated events is Pettole & Sound, an evening where local gastronomy meets live music: the famous Salento pettole (fried dough balls), fried on the spot, accompany concerts and entertainment in the neighborhood squares. There are also briscola and scopone tournaments in the historic center—a classic of town festivals that brings together young and old around the tables—and musical evenings with guest performers animating Piazza Pertini. The festivities conclude with the unmissable fireworks display, lighting up the sky over Galatone and bidding farewell to the celebration until next year.
Located in central Salento, just a few kilometers from Lecce and the Ionian coast, Galatone is a town rich in religious traditions and popular festivals, ranging from the famous Sanctuary of the Crucifix of Mercy to numerous neighborhood celebrations. The Sacred Heart of Jesus Festival is a piece of this mosaic of events that, throughout the summer months, mark the life of the community and offer residents and visitors an authentic opportunity to discover the culture of the territory, in the province of Lecce, in Puglia.
