Three days of faith, music, and tradition in the Taverna district of Battipaglia
Every year, at the start of summer, the Taverna district of Battipaglia, in the province of Salerno, gathers around the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Via Rosa Jemma for one of the city's most popular events. The Sacred Heart Festival is promoted by the Santa Teresa del Bambino Gesù Parish, led by Father Luigi Piccolo, with the support of the Municipality of Battipaglia. It blends liturgical celebrations, a solemn procession, concerts, a funfair, and street markets into a few days—the classic formula of Campanian festivals, where popular devotion and street life are inseparable.
The feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus falls in the liturgical calendar shortly after Corpus Christi, and in Battipaglia, it serves as an occasion for a multi-day spiritual preparation. The opening is marked by the traditional raising of the banner, a large cloth that announces the start of the festivities to the entire neighborhood, followed by nights of nocturnal Eucharistic adoration and daily services at the church on Via Rosa Jemma. While this is the less visible part of the festival, it is the heart of the event, where the parish community prepares for the days ahead.
The highlight is the Sunday evening procession, which departs at 6:00 PM from the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and winds through the streets of the Taverna district: Via Rossini, Paganini, Cimarosa, Ponchielli, Vivaldi, Salieri, Strauss, Chopin, Scarlatti, Donizetti, Giordano, and Via Rosa Jemma itself. The procession is accompanied by the Gran Complesso Bandistico Città di Salerno, which sets the slow, solemn pace typical of Southern Italian processions, as families wait on their doorsteps and balconies are decorated for the occasion. Upon returning to the church, a holy mass is celebrated.
The secular festivities take place along Via Rosa Jemma, which is closed to traffic for the occasion. The program alternates between events for children and teenagers—such as the Miss & Mister Baby and Kids & Music competitions, and performances by dance schools and the local oratory—and concerts by well-known names in Neapolitan and Italian music. In recent years, artists such as Michele Pecora, Monica Sarnelli, and violinist Felice D'Amico have graced the stage, alongside groups dedicated to Campanian folk traditions: the tammorra and traditional begging songs remain the most recognizable musical language in this part of Campania.
With about fifty thousand inhabitants, Battipaglia is one of the most populous municipalities in the province of Salerno and the nerve center of the Piana del Sele, a land famous for its Buffalo Mozzarella DOP, artichokes, and produce that supplies half of Italy. The city is located just a few kilometers from the sea and the archaeological excavations of Paestum, and just over twenty kilometers from Salerno: visitors coming for the festival can easily include it in a broader itinerary through coastal and inland Campania. Along with the patronal feast of Saint Teresa, the Sacred Heart Festival is one of the key events in the calendar of the Municipality of Battipaglia.
From June 20 to 22, 2026, the Taverna district of Battipaglia celebrated its Sacred Heart Festival, promoted by the Santa Teresa del Bambino Gesù Parish with the support of the Municipality. The preparation process began eight days earlier, on Friday, June 12, with the opening mass and the raising of the banner, followed by two nights of nocturnal Eucharistic adoration.
The religious heart of the festivities was the procession on Sunday, June 21, which departed at 6:00 PM from the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and was accompanied by the Gran Complesso Bandistico Città di Salerno through the streets of the neighborhood, followed by holy mass upon return. On the secular side, three evenings of shows took place along Via Rosa Jemma, closed to traffic from 5:00 PM to 1:00 AM, with a funfair, charity auctions, and stands open until late at night.
For all three evenings: funfair, charity auctions, street vendors, and entertainment stands for all ages.
