A Sikh procession in the heart of a rationalist city

The Sabaudia Nagar Kirtan is one of the most unique and well-attended religious events in lower Lazio. Every year in June, the Sikh community of the Agro Pontino marches through the rationalist streets of this 'city of dunes,' transforming the center of Sabaudia into a riot of colors, turbans, orange flags, and sacred hymns. The 2026 edition, the twenty-fourth consecutive year, brought over 5,000 people—men, women, seniors, and children—to the streets, a number that testifies to how deeply rooted this tradition is in the Pontine territory.

What is the Nagar Kirtan?

In the Sikh tradition, the Nagar Kirtan (literally 'singing hymns through the town') is a devotional procession where the community accompanies the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikhism, while chanting religious hymns (kirtan) and reciting prayers along the streets. It is one of the most important public expressions of this faith, which counts over 35 million followers worldwide. The procession moves slowly, punctuated by singing and music, in a festive atmosphere open to anyone who wishes to watch or join the walk.

Twenty-four years of tradition in the Agro Pontino

The Sabaudia procession is organized by the local Gurdwara, the Sikh temple, and has been held every June for 24 consecutive years. The Agro Pontino is home to one of the largest Indian communities in Italy: thousands of workers originally from Punjab, employed primarily in the countryside and agricultural businesses of the province of Latina, who use this day to publicly celebrate their faith and identity. In past editions, the parade has started from the temple and wound through the city center, including Via degli Artiglieri and Via Emanuele Filiberto Testa di Ferro, before reaching Piazza Santa Barbara, where the main religious ceremonies take place.

Seva: the hospitality that wins over the city

One of the most significant aspects of the Nagar Kirtan is the spirit of seva, the selfless service that is a pillar of Sikhism. Along the route, over 50 refreshment points and full-scale community kitchens are set up, where volunteers offer free vegetarian food, traditional sweets, fruit, and cold drinks to devotees, visitors, and curious onlookers all day long. It is a gesture of generosity that impresses the locals and tourists every year, making the procession a moment of encounter and exchange between cultures.

A bridge between Punjab and Lazio

The Nagar Kirtan is now considered a successful example of coexistence and integration in the Municipality of Sabaudia and throughout the Lazio region. The day attracts Sikh worshippers from other Lazio cities and the rest of Italy, as well as photographers, scholars, and curious visitors drawn by a celebration that combines spirituality, music, and hospitality. For those visiting the Pontine coast in June, between the Circeo National Park and the coastal dunes, it is a rare opportunity to witness a major South Asian religious festival in the heart of a 1930s planned city.
