The patron saint of Fondi: faith and civic identity

The Sant'Onorato Patronal Festival is the most cherished event of the year in Fondi, a city in the province of Latina, in southern Lazio. The saint, a young monk who became an abbot and leader of the community, is remembered by tradition as a figure capable of balancing contemplation with social commitment: he gathered about two hundred disciples around him and, according to legend, was called upon by the people of Fondi themselves to lead the city.

The date of October 10th is no coincidence: it was in 1874 that the solemnity was moved from January 16th to the autumn, when the mild climate and the end of agricultural work allowed the entire population to participate. Since then, every year, the silver bust of the Saint is carried in procession through the streets of the center to bless the sick and the community.

The historic fair: stalls, illuminations, and lucky umbrellas

The secular heart of the festival is the Sant'Onorato Fair, one of the oldest in lower Lazio. On October 9th and 10th, stands and stalls occupy the pedestrian area and surrounding streets, closed to traffic by municipal ordinance. You can find local products, sweets, household goods, handicrafts, and clothing, all under the lights that illuminate the center.

A unique local quirk: you cannot return home from the fair without an umbrella. Buying an umbrella is considered the true good-luck charm of the festival, a gesture passed down from generation to generation that symbolically marks the entry into the rainy season.

The Cathedral houses the relics of the patron saint along with those of Saints Paterno and Libertino: 2025 marked the 810th anniversary of the translation of the Saint's body to the Cathedral, celebrated with particular solemnity during the Holy Year.

Cultural events by the Pro Loco

Alongside the religious dimension, the Pro Loco Fondi Association builds a cultural program every year that highlights the city's heritage. Recurring events include: the concert Corde e Voce nel Duomo — musical dialogues in the church of San Pietro, the urban trekking tour The Fondi you don't expect to discover the historic center and its stories, book presentations at Castello Caetani, and closing choral concerts. There is also no shortage of charitable initiatives, such as blood donation days promoted with the local Avis.

Fondi, a city to discover

The festival is also the ideal opportunity to visit Fondi, a town of pre-Roman origins enclosed by city walls, dominated by the Caetani Baronial Castle and overlooking the lake of the same name. The city is famous for its fruit and vegetable market, one of the most important in Italy, and for a gastronomy linked to citrus fruits, extra virgin olive oil, and products from the Ausonian hinterland. During the festival days, restaurants and local venues offer traditional menus.
