The masked festival in the heart of Russi, between Piazza Farini and Piazza Dante
The Russi Carnival is the masked festival that colors the historic center of the Municipality of Russi, in the province of Ravenna, in the heart of Romagna. A day designed for the whole family, where the town squares fill with masks, confetti, music, and the unmistakable scent of mulled wine. The event takes place mainly between Piazza Farini and Piazza Dante, with events also spread throughout the spaces and arcades of the center.
The event is promoted by the young people of the Iki-Guys association in collaboration with the Municipality of Russi, the Pro Loco, the Chef to Chef association, the Twinning Committee, the Parish of Sant'Apollinare, the Artëj cultural association, the Porta Nova social center, the Lamone Sports Group, and local shopkeepers. A collective effort involving numerous local entities, making the Carnival a moment of community before it is a celebration.
The program alternates cultural, gastronomic, and recreational moments. The morning begins with a meeting dedicated to the origins of Carnival, while at noon the traditional bean feast is the star, a symbolic dish of the festival. In the afternoon, the squares come alive with the contest for masked groups and individual masks, free workshops and games for children, face painting, and a collective art exhibition. The day concludes with awards and a lottery, with prizes donated by local shopkeepers.
There is also a food stand with Romagna and Carnival specialties: piadina, fried pizza, typical Carnival sweets, and mulled wine to warm up the winter day. The bean feast, prepared by the Twinning Committee, is one of the most anticipated dishes and also tells of the bond of friendship between Russi and other communities.
The Russi Carnival is also an opportunity to strengthen twinnings and friendships between communities, with the participation of guests from other territories. Included in the calendar of winter events in Emilia-Romagna, it is one of the most cherished popular festivals by the citizens, capable of uniting tradition, fun, and community spirit in the historic center of Russi.
The Russi Carnival 2026 enlivened the historic center on Sunday, February 8. The day opened at 10:00 AM with "Chatting about the origins of Carnival" at the former Church in Albis, in Piazza Farini. At noon, it was time for the traditional bean feast at the Porta Nova Social Center, with guests from Saluggia, a twinned town that participated in the event for the first time.
From the afternoon, the squares came alive with the contest for masked groups and individual masks, free workshops and games for children in Piazza Dante and Piazza Farini, face painting under the arcades, and a collective art exhibition. At 4:00 PM, the awards ceremony and at 4:30 PM, the lottery with prizes offered by local shopkeepers. Throughout the day, the food stand offered piadina, fried pizza, Carnival sweets, and mulled wine.
Russi is located in the province of Ravenna, along the Via Faentina. By car, it can be reached from the SS253 San Vitale and the state road between Ravenna and Faenza; for those arriving from outside the region, the most convenient motorway exit is the A14 towards Ravenna or Faenza. Russi train station is served by the Faenza–Ravenna–Rimini line.
The festival takes place on a single day during the Carnival period, generally in February, with a possible reserve date in case of bad weather.
Access to the squares and scheduled activities is free. Food and drinks at the food stand are at a cost, and participation in the bean feast usually requires booking.
Event suitable for families with children. Warm winter clothing is recommended, and for those wishing to participate in the contest, it is advisable to inquire in advance about registration procedures with the organizers.
