About Chestnut and Homemade Bread Festival

Every year, on the third Sunday of October, Brallo di Pregola celebrates the Apennine autumn with the Chestnut and Homemade Bread Festival. In Piazza del Municipio, steaming roasted chestnuts, bread baked in the wood-fired ovens of the hamlets, and mulled wine take center stage, while the Alpini Group serves the traditional lunch with polenta, lentils, and cooked salami. Amidst folk music, craft stalls, local products, and a walk through ancient chestnut groves in the foliage, it's the festival that best tells the identity of this corner of the Oltrepò Pavese.

Chestnuts and bread, symbols of autumn

The Chestnut and Homemade Bread Festival is the autumn event in Brallo di Pregola, a mountain municipality in the Alto Oltrepò region of the Province of Pavia. Every year, on the third Sunday of October, Piazza del Municipio fills with aromas and flavors that celebrate two symbols of the peasant tradition of these valleys: chestnuts and homemade bread.

Bread from wood-fired ovens

The homemade bread, the true protagonist of the festival, is prepared according to old recipes and baked in the wood-fired ovens still present in the hamlets of the municipality. It is the symbol of home, community, and authenticity that the festival aims to pass on, alongside the roasted chestnuts served hot and accompanied by mulled wine or hot chocolate.

The Alpini's lunch and Pro Loco's desserts

Under the marquee of the Brallo Alpini Group, you can enjoy the traditional lunch with polenta, lentils, and cooked salami. The Pro Loco of Brallo offers typical desserts, from chestnut cakes to rustic biscuits, while stalls display local crafts and products such as oil and cheeses.

Music, nature, and foliage

The day is accompanied by folk music and a walk through the ancient chestnut trees, an excursion into the autumn foliage suitable for everyone. Promoted by the Pro Loco, the festival is an opportunity to discover the Pavia mountains and the traditions of the Oltrepò Pavese, in a corner of Lombardy where the Apennines meet Piedmont and Emilia.
