The ski mountaineering race at the foot of the Monte Rosa East Face
The Rosa Ski Raid is the most anticipated winter event in Macugnaga, a village in the Anzasca Valley, Piedmont. The ski mountaineering race takes place in a unique setting: at the foot of the East Face of Monte Rosa, known as the only Himalayan-style face in Europe and the highest in the Alps—a natural amphitheater of ice and rock that serves as the backdrop for the entire competition.
The course alternates between groomed slopes and high-mountain off-piste sections, featuring three climbs and a total elevation gain of approximately 1,600 meters. The race starts near the Pecetto chairlift, while the finish line is located in the center of Macugnaga. It is a demanding track designed to test even the best specialists in the discipline.
Macugnaga and the organizing committee, the Sci Club Valle Anzasca, have been entrusted by the FISI (Italian Winter Sports Federation) to host a leg of the Absolute Individual Italian Championship, which is also open to international competitors. The starting line features around one hundred ski mountaineers, including national team athletes and top-tier international stars, competing in Under 23, Senior, and Master categories for both men and women.
The event benefits from the invaluable collaboration of ski mountaineering world champion Damiano Lenzi, a native of Ceppo Morelli in the Anzasca Valley. Beyond the race, the Rosa Ski Raid is a local festival that culminates in the awards ceremony and the traditional pasta party in the square—a moment of connection between athletes, spectators, and organizers in one of the most charming alpine villages in Piedmont.
