A popular festival in the green heart of Appio Latino

The Rome Festa dell'Unità is one of the most recognizable summer events in the capital. Originally a party festival, it has evolved over the years into a large public outdoor space where politics, culture, music, and conviviality intertwine. For the 2026 edition, the event moved to a new home: after several seasons in the shadow of the Baths of Caracalla, the festival relocated to Villa Lazzaroni, the green lung of the Appio Latino district overlooking Via Appia Nuova, in the territory of Rome's VII Municipality, in the Lazio region.

This move is more than just a logistical detail: bringing the festival into a historic neighborhood villa means restoring it to a local dimension—tables under the trees, families arriving on foot after dinner, and young people stopping to listen to a concert without needing a ticket.

Four souls, one square

The program is organized into four major thematic areas that coexist every evening within the park:

• Debates — the historical heart of the festival: discussions on healthcare, education, culture, housing, labor rights, and urban services, featuring administrators, journalists, trade unions, and third-sector organizations.
• Books — the bookstore area, with daily meetings with authors starting at 6:30 PM.
• Events, music, and dance — live concerts alternating between historical bands from the Roman scene and emerging young singers, as well as dance evenings.
• Eat and drink — the gastronomic area, with cuisine, snacks, and drinks until late at night.

The festival's cuisine

Dining is an integral part of the Festa dell'Unità identity, and at Villa Lazzaroni, it maintains its popular, self-managed character. Alongside the main restaurant, run by volunteers in collaboration with local social agriculture initiatives, there is a food stall by the Young Democrats serving sandwiches, burgers, and sausages, a grill station with chicken and potatoes, an ethnic food stand, and a bar with sandwiches and pizza. Prices remain intentionally affordable: you can eat well while spending little, sitting at outdoor tables.

The theme of the 2026 edition: peace

The 2026 edition chose to focus on the value of peace, declared by the organizers as the common thread for all evenings: a theme that permeated the debates, meetings with associations, and even the concerts. The festival was attended by prominent figures of national and local politics, including national secretary Elly Schlein, the Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri, and MEP Nicola Zingaretti, alongside prominent figures from the cultural and journalistic scene.

Why it's worth visiting

Even those who do not identify with the festival's political color will find at Villa Lazzaroni a model of urban summer festival that is now rare: free, outdoors, with a dense schedule ranging from author meetings to quality live music, and that village-fair style cuisine that has become a genre of its own in Rome. It is also an excellent opportunity to discover Appio Latino, a neighborhood off the classic tourist circuits but only a few minutes by subway from the historic center.

A tradition that moves

It must be clearly stated: the Rome Festa dell'Unità is not tied to a fixed location. Over the years, it has crossed various spaces in the city—from Porta Capena to the Baths of Caracalla, and now to Villa Lazzaroni—and the choice of venue is announced every spring. It is therefore advisable to check the location before heading out, while the calendar placement remains stable between the second half of June and early July. The June festival also opens a broader season, with neighborhood festivals organized in July and August in various Roman municipalities.
