Among them is San Marco d'Alunzio, a jewel perched at 540 meters on the northern slopes of the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Messina. For one evening, the squares, staircases, and alleys of the historic center become the backdrop for a celebration dedicated to love, memories, and the beauty of Italy's smaller towns.
A village with 2,500 years of history
San Marco d'Alunzio is one of the oldest centers in Sicily: Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Normans have all left their mark here, from the Greek temple dedicated to Hercules (4th century BC) to the more than twenty churches in the village. Its distinctive feature is the San Marco red marble, a local stone with white and grey-blue veins, used for portals, cladding, and the evocative Mother Church of San Nicolò. Walking through these alleys at night, illuminated only by torches and candles, is an experience that makes the Romantic Night particularly intense.
What to expect during the evening
The event brings the historic center to life from sunset until late at night, following the formula shared by all participating villages, tailored with a program curated each year by the municipal administration and local entities. Recurring highlights of the evening include:
- Village streets and squares enveloped in soft lighting created by torches, lanterns, and candles;
- Moments of live music and open-air performances in the small squares of the historic center;
- Candlelight dinners with special menus in the village restaurants;
- The "Pensiero d'Amore" dessert, created exclusively for the Romantic Night, served in participating venues;
- At the stroke of midnight, a collective kiss accompanied by the release of biodegradable balloons.

The 2026 edition of the Romantic Night in San Marco d'Alunzio was held on Saturday, June 20th, as part of the eleventh national edition of the event promoted by the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy Association. The chosen theme was "Love for Memories," an invitation to rediscover roots, traditions, and flavors capable of uniting different generations.
As in other participating villages, the historic center of this Nebrodi village, in the province of Messina, was wrapped in soft lighting created by torches and candles, with candlelight dinners in the village restaurants and the "Pensiero d'Amore" dessert served in participating venues. At the stroke of midnight, the collective kiss took place with the release of biodegradable balloons.

By car: take the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (exit at Sant'Agata di Militello or Rocca di Caprileone) and continue along the road climbing into the Nebrodi mountains. By train: the nearest station is Sant'Agata di Militello on the Tyrrhenian line, from where you can continue by car or bus. The reference airports are Catania Fontanarossa or Palermo Falcone-Borsellino.
