The most romantic night of the year amidst the red marble alleys of the Nebrodi village
Every year, around the summer solstice, over two hundred Italian villages light up simultaneously for the Romantic Night, an initiative promoted by the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy national association. Among them is San Marco d'Alunzio, a jewel perched at 540 meters on the northern slopes of the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Messina. For one evening, the squares, staircases, and alleys of the historic center become the backdrop for a celebration dedicated to love, memories, and the beauty of Italy's smaller towns.
San Marco d'Alunzio is one of the oldest centers in Sicily: Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Normans have all left their mark here, from the Greek temple dedicated to Hercules (4th century BC) to the more than twenty churches in the village. Its distinctive feature is the San Marco red marble, a local stone with white and grey-blue veins, used for portals, cladding, and the evocative Mother Church of San Nicolรฒ. Walking through these alleys at night, illuminated only by torches and candles, is an experience that makes the Romantic Night particularly intense.
The event brings the historic center to life from sunset until late at night, following the formula shared by all participating villages, tailored with a program curated each year by the municipal administration and local entities. Recurring highlights of the evening include:
The Romantic Night was born as a tribute to lovers, but it is also an opportunity to experience San Marco d'Alunzio in a different light, far from day-trip tourism. It is the perfect time to stroll through the red marble alleys, enjoy the cool mountain evening air, and breathe in the atmosphere of a community celebrating its traditions within the framework of an event shared by the entire network of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
The 2026 edition of the Romantic Night in San Marco d'Alunzio was held on Saturday, June 20th, as part of the eleventh national edition of the event promoted by the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy Association. The chosen theme was "Love for Memories," an invitation to rediscover roots, traditions, and flavors capable of uniting different generations.
As in other participating villages, the historic center of this Nebrodi village, in the province of Messina, was wrapped in soft lighting created by torches and candles, with candlelight dinners in the village restaurants and the "Pensiero d'Amore" dessert served in participating venues. At the stroke of midnight, the collective kiss took place with the release of biodegradable balloons.
National theme of the eleventh edition: "Love for Memories". The evening followed the formula shared by all participating villages, adapted for the historic center of the Nebrodi village:
