Sport, culture, and heritage in the village of champions, Ripa Teatina
Every summer, the small village of Ripa Teatina, in the province of Chieti, transforms into the Abruzzo capital of sport and sports culture thanks to the Rocky Marciano Festival. The event is named after the legendary boxer Rocky Marciano (1923-1969), the only undefeated world heavyweight champion in boxing history, whose family originated from this very town. It is no coincidence that Ripa Teatina is known as the "village of champions": it is the only town in the world to have given birth to two world boxing champions, Rocky Marciano and Rocky Mattioli.
The festival spans three days, combining entertainment, cultural reflection, and award ceremonies. The opening evenings are dedicated to the Sports Literature Festival, featuring book presentations, interviews with sports journalists and writers, meetings with athletes, and dialogues on the educational value of sports. The literary heart of the event is the national "Storie di Sport" competition, which honors the best stories capable of capturing humanity through the lens of sport.
The final evening is dedicated to the presentation of the Rocky Marciano Award, which brings a true parade of Italian sports stars to Ripa Teatina every year. Athletes of the year, boxers, promising young talents, teams, and executives are honored in an event that weaves together memory, celebration, and roots tourism.
At the core of the festival is the "Lo Sport di Fare Comunitร " (Sport as Community Building) project, which promotes sport as an educational experience, a universal language, and a tool for social inclusion. The event is organized by the APS Festival Rocky Marciano ETS in collaboration with the Scuola Macondo and involves local schools, associations, and institutions, contributing to the enhancement of the identity and heritage of Ripa Teatina and the entire Abruzzo region.
The twenty-second edition of the Rocky Marciano Festival is scheduled in Ripa Teatina (CH), Abruzzo, from July 23 to 25, 2026. The three-day format is confirmed, featuring sports literature, contemporary art, and the traditional Rocky Marciano Award ceremony.
Among the highlights of the 2026 edition, the national literary competition "Storie di Sport" reaches its tenth anniversary. Thanks to a new collaboration between the APS Festival Rocky Marciano ETS, the Scuola Macondo, and the Panathlon Club Chieti, a Special Panathlon Club Chieti Award has been established, dedicated to the work that best represents the ethical, educational, and social values of sport. The competition's award ceremony is scheduled for Friday, July 24, 2026, as part of the official program.
The detailed program including guests, times, and award recipients will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event on the official website.
