The independent music festival nestled in the Gran Sasso mountains

The Rock Your Head Festival is a summer staple dedicated to independent music that has been enlivening Montebello di Bertona for years. This tiny municipality of about 900 residents in the province of Pescara, located at the foot of Monte Bertona, lies in the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Born as a grassroots gathering, it has established itself over the years as one of the most fiercely independent events in Abruzzo and, more broadly, in all of Southern Italy.
For a few days each summer, the village's historic center becomes a sprawling stage: around twenty musical performances are spread across multiple venues, often starting in the morning, alternating between sought-after bands from the Italian scene and international artists. The program spans indie, rock, electronic, and experimental sounds, with an artistic direction focused on emerging talent and fringe sonic landscapes.
The festival is much more than a series of concerts: alongside the music, there are creative workshops, hikes along the trails of the Gran Sasso, meditation sessions, and sports activities. The underlying philosophy is that of a community laboratory, weaving together artists, artisans, associations, and citizens to counter the depopulation of small towns and build active processes of socio-cultural regeneration in the area.
The event is promoted by the Contratto Sociale APS association, an organization that fosters sociality, mutualism, participation, and a sense of community. Admission is free: the festival is sustained by the work of volunteers, local support, and crowdfunding campaigns, in the absence of stable public funding.
Attending Rock Your Head means discovering an authentic corner of inland Abruzzo, amidst mountains, stone villages, and starry skies. For those who love independent music and human-scale festivals, Montebello di Bertona is a must-add to your summer agenda.
At the moment, no official dates or program have been announced for the 2026 edition of the Rock Your Head Festival. Over the years, the event has been held in Montebello di Bertona, in the province of Pescara, generally in mid-August, with free admission. For updated information on dates, line-up, and side activities, please refer to the official channels of the organization Contratto Sociale APS.
Montebello di Bertona can be reached by car from the Pescara-Chieti motorway exit (A14/A25), continuing inland towards the Gran Sasso. The nearest train station is Pescara Centrale, from which you can continue by bus or car.
Admission to the festival is free. Refreshment areas and food stands are generally available on-site. Comfortable shoes are recommended for navigating the alleys of the historic center, as well as a warm layer for the evenings at altitude.
The area offers farm stays (agriturismi), B&Bs, and various accommodations in the neighboring towns and within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park area.
