About Rock Mass

Every August 15th, at the first light of dawn, the Port Authority Square of Igea Marina becomes an open-air church: it's the Rock Mass, the most evocative event of Ferragosto in Bellaria-Igea Marina. Don Marco Foschi, known to all as "don Mark", celebrates the Assumption feast with liturgical chants performed in a rock key, accompanied by drums, percussion, and electric guitar, as the sun rises from the sea. A ritual of light and music that draws hundreds of faithful and curious onlookers to the Romagna coast.

The Rock Mass, Igea Marina's Most Evocative Ferragosto

The Rock Mass is now one of the most beloved and iconic events of Ferragosto in Bellaria-Igea Marina, in the province of Rimini, in the heart of the Romagna Riviera of Emilia-Romagna. Every August 15th, at the first light of dawn, the Port Authority Square, in the Igea Marina district, transforms into a large open-air church overlooking the sea. Hundreds of people gather in the darkness still over the water to witness the celebration of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the sun slowly rises from the Adriatic.

A Liturgy Accompanied by Drums, Guitar, and Percussion

The celebration is led by don Marco Foschi, pastor of the Parish of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Igea Marina, known in town simply as "don Mark". His idea is a Mass with a different rhythm: the liturgical chants are performed in a rock key, accompanied by a band with drums, percussion, electric guitar, and other instruments. The result is a joyful and engaging celebration, designed especially for young people, including those who spent the night partying in the coastal clubs and who gather here at dawn.

A Moment of Silence Before the Rising Sun

Alongside the energy of the music, the Rock Mass preserves a moment of profound intensity: the contemplative silence before the sun rising from the water, experienced as an instant of collective recollection. It is this contrast, between the sonic celebration and the quiet of the dawn over the sea, that makes the experience unique and draws very large numbers of attendees each year, up to a thousand participants in the most popular editions.

A Historic Event on the Summer Calendar

Dawn Masses on the beach have been a tradition for over ten years, born from the desire to bring young people closer to the spiritual dimension through a musical language familiar to them. The Ferragosto Rock Mass is part of Bellaria-Igea Marina's rich summer calendar, alongside other historic events on August 14th and 15th, such as the musical fireworks and events at the canal port, confirming the Municipality of Bellaria-Igea Marina as one of the most vibrant destinations on the Romagna coast.
