The masquerade festival in the heart of the Monti Lepini, featuring confetti, fried treats, and village cheer

Perched on a spur of Monte Curio at an altitude of 376 meters, Roccasecca dei Volsci overlooks the Amaseno valley with its intact medieval core, defined by concentric alleys that wind up to Piazza Umberto I. Here, every year between late February and early March, the village transforms for Carnival: one of the most anticipated events in the calendar curated by the Pro Loco of Roccasecca dei Volsci, in the heart of the Latina province, in southern Lazio.
The Roccasecca Carnival is not a large-scale tourist event; it is a village festival built by volunteers for their fellow citizens. The afternoon of festivities takes place in the squares and streets of the town center, where children arrive in costume accompanied by their families. Music, entertainment, games, and the distribution of sweets create that atmosphere of shared joy that characterizes the small towns of the Pontine hinterland.
As throughout Lazio, Carnival in Roccasecca dei Volsci is inextricably linked to homemade fried sweets: frappe (also known as chiacchiere in other regions), thin and crispy, dusted with powdered sugar, and castagnole, small soft spheres fried in oil. These are simple preparations that every family makes according to their own recipe and shares generously during the holidays. It is not uncommon for the Pro Loco to organize their distribution, along with cotton candy and popcorn for the children.
Carnival is just one of the events that mark the Roccasecca year. The Pro Loco, led by Alessandra Cipolla, manages a calendar that accompanies the community season after season: from the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot in January, with polenta, chickpeas, and beans, to workshops for children during the Christmas holidays, from the Saint Joseph's Bonfire in March to the Spring Festival, and finally the famous Goat Festival, which has been attracting visitors from across the province for over forty years. The Carnival fits into this tradition of local volunteering that keeps the village's identity alive.
Those arriving for Carnival can take the opportunity to discover a village of just over a thousand inhabitants, founded in the 9th century by people from nearby Priverno fleeing Saracen raids. The historic center preserves the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the Baronial Castle, which overlook Piazza Umberto I. In the upper part of the village stands the Temple of Saint Raphael, in a classical style, featuring a cycle of frescoes attributed to the school of Domenichino. The current name, adopted in 1872, recalls the ancient Italic people of the Volsci, who inhabited this stretch of southern Lazio before the Roman conquest.
The Lazio Carnival lives primarily in the squares of small towns, where the festival maintains a familiar and participatory dimension, far removed from the spectacle of large national carnivals. In Roccasecca dei Volsci, as in dozens of other towns in the Monti Lepini and the Amaseno Valley, the occasion marks the moment when winter gives way to spring, with a collective ritual of masks and shared sweets. For the visitor, it is an opportunity to experience the Italy of small villages in its most authentic form.
The 2026 liturgical calendar placed Easter on April 5th: consequently, Shrove Tuesday fell on February 17, 2026, with the festivities concentrated in the preceding week. In the small towns of the Latina province, Carnival traditionally takes place in that window, between the weekend and the final Tuesday.
For Roccasecca dei Volsci, there are currently no official announcements, posters, or publications with the dates and program for the 2026 edition. The Pro Loco of Roccasecca dei Volsci usually includes Carnival in its annual schedule, alongside the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot, the Saint Joseph's Bonfire, the Spring Festival, and the Goat Festival, but it has not released a detailed announcement online for 2026.
Those wishing to participate are invited to check directly with the Pro Loco or the Municipality of Roccasecca dei Volsci. This page will be updated as soon as official information becomes available.
By car: from Rome, take the A1 motorway to Frosinone, then the SS156 of the Monti Lepini towards Priverno; from Latina, about 25 km east. By train: Priverno-Fossanova station on the Rome-Naples line via Formia, then about 10 km by provincial road.
The event is free and open to the public, held outdoors in the historic center of the village.
The historic center is characterized by uphill alleys and staircases: comfortable shoes are recommended. In February, temperatures at 376 meters above sea level can be chilly, so warm clothing is advised. Parking should be sought on the outskirts of the village, as the ancient core is pedestrianized and narrow.
For updated dates and programs, it is recommended to follow the Facebook page of the Pro Loco of Roccasecca dei Volsci, which publishes event posters a few weeks in advance.
