Fig Festival (Fig Sagra)

An end-of-summer festival in the heart of the Southern Pontine area

The Fig Festival — commonly known as the Sagra del Fico — is the event that marks the end of summer in Monte San Biagio, a town in the province of Latina, in southern Lazio. The event takes place in the hamlet of Campo Marinello, the agricultural plain stretching at the foot of the hillside village, typically on the third weekend of August. It is a festival born from the community and for the community: it is organized by the Pro Loco of Monte San Biagio, which has been managing every detail for decades with the contribution of volunteers and families from the hamlet.

The fig, the identity fruit of the Pontine land

The absolute star is the fig, always cultivated in the countryside that slopes down towards the lake of Fondi and the coastal plain. The late August ripening coincides with the best time to enjoy it: fresh, just picked, or prepared according to recipes passed down through families. During the festival, you can taste freshly harvested figs, dried figs, preserves, and desserts, as well as numerous other typical local products, from cured meats — Monte San Biagio is famous for its sausage — to cheeses, from extra virgin olive oil to local wines. The fig, here, is not just an agricultural product: it is a piece of collective memory, the recollection of summers spent in the fields and days of harvesting shared among neighbors.

What happens during the two evenings

The rhythm of the festival is that of a classic Lazio sagra: simple and generous. As the sun sets, the food stalls open, set up in the open air: people eat at communal tables, drink, and chat. On stage, live music bands take turns, often with repertoires of folk music, ballroom dancing, and Italian hits that get all generations on their feet.

The allegorical floats, the distinctive feature

The element that makes the Fig Festival different from other festivals in the area is the parade of allegorical floats. In the months leading up to the event, groups from the districts work in secret on the construction of their floats, playing on satirical, mythological, or current event themes. On Sunday evening, the floats travel through the streets of Campo Marinello accompanied by performers and music, and a jury awards prizes: it is the most anticipated moment, the one that attracts the largest audience, even from the neighboring towns of Fondi, Terracina, Sperlonga, and Itri.

An opportunity to discover Monte San Biagio

Those arriving for the festival have good reasons to stay the next day as well. The historic center of Monte San Biagio preserves its medieval layout, with narrow alleys, arches, and glimpses that open onto the lake of Fondi and the sea. The municipal territory is partly included in the Monti Ausoni and Lake Fondi Natural Park, ideal for hiking, while the beaches of the Gulf of Gaeta can be reached in a few minutes by car. It is the type of festival that allows you to see a town in Lazio as it really is: without tourist filters, with locals welcoming those who arrive as they would welcome a guest into their own home.

Visitor advice

Arrive early, around 7 pm, when the stalls open and there is still space at the tables. Bring cash: as in many village festivals, not all stalls accept electronic payments. And leave room for the fig-based desserts, which sell out within a few hours.
