Fossanova Medieval Festival

A village returning to the Middle Ages

For three evenings in mid-August, the Borgo di Fossanova, a hamlet of the municipality of Priverno in the province of Latina, transforms into an authentic medieval village. The Fossanova Medieval Festival is considered one of the most evocative historical re-enactments in Central Italy: the cobblestone streets, stone houses, and small squares of the village fill with knights, ladies, flag-wavers, jesters, artisans, and merchants, while the public moves through the festival as if walking inside a 13th-century fresco.

The setting: Fossanova Abbey

The heart of the event is the Cistercian Abbey of Fossanova, a masterpiece of Italian Cistercian Gothic architecture built in the 13th century and a national monument. Here, on March 7, 1274, Saint Thomas Aquinas died: a historical bond that the festival commemorates every year and which has particularly inspired recent editions. The cloister, the abbey garden, the Infirmary of the Conversi, and the village courtyards become stages, creating a scenic effect that few Italian re-enactments can boast.

Shows and atmosphere

From the late afternoon, as the light begins to fade over the abbey stones, the village lights up with torches and the program comes to life until late at night. Regular features of the various editions include:

• Carousels and costume parades with hundreds of participants
• Historical pageants and flag-waver performances
• Medieval fencing re-enactments and chivalric duels
• Falconry demonstrations and archery
• Comic juggling, jesters, stilt-walkers, and acrobats
• Fire shows and aerial dance to close the evening
• Itinerant music, historical dances, and commedia dell'arte

The medieval camp and ancient crafts

Alongside the shows, the festival dedicates ample space to the reconstruction of daily life: the medieval camp with encampments, weapons, and period games; craft workshops where leather, iron, ceramics, and textiles are worked; artisan markets; and paths dedicated to medicinal herbs and medieval cuisine. Part of the program is specifically designed for children, who can try archery, watch falconry, and participate in traditional games.

Taverns, inns, and local gastronomy

Dining is an integral part of the experience. In the taverns set up for the occasion and in the village bistros, you can taste traditional dishes from the Monti Lepini and typical products of the province of Latina, along with street food options. Refreshment areas are distributed between the large arena and the village courtyards, allowing you to dine without missing the shows.

Why it's worth the trip

Just over an hour from Rome, Fossanova offers a rare encounter in August between authentic monumental heritage and a well-curated popular re-enactment. It is not a set built for the occasion: the village and the abbey are real, and the festival simply restores them to their era. This, more than anything else, explains the success of an event that has become a fixed appointment for Ferragosto in Southern Lazio.
