About Roccaraso Vola

Every summer, the Piano dell'Aremogna in Roccaraso transforms into a vast open-air stage where hundreds of kites paint the mountain sky. Roccaraso Vola is a free, family-friendly festival featuring kite flying displays, acrobatic flights, kite-making workshops, and the enchanting 'Luci in volo' evening show, where illuminated kites dance in the dark. Enjoy three days of high-altitude fun in the heart of the Altosangro peaks, in the province of L'Aquila, and experience the Abruzzo summer with your eyes turned to the sky.

Roccaraso Vola: kites conquer the Aremogna sky

Roccaraso Vola - Kite Festival is one of the most beloved summer events in the Altosangro area, located in the municipality of Roccaraso, in the province of L'Aquila, the mountainous heart of Abruzzo. The event takes place on the Piano dell'Aremogna, a vast plateau at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters that serves as a ski resort in winter and a perfect green expanse for kite flying in summer.

A tradition born in 2013

Now in its thirteenth edition, the festival has grown over the years into a gathering for enthusiasts from all over Italy. Static and acrobatic kites of every shape and size take to the skies above the Aremogna grass, guided by kite-flying teams who bring the entire day to life with spectacular performances and aerial choreography.

A program designed for families

Roccaraso Vola is a child-friendly festival that is completely free. Throughout the days, various activities are dedicated to children and families:

  • Hands-on workshops to build your own kite to fly;
  • Guided group flights led by expert kite flyers;
  • Candy drops from the sky, one of the most anticipated moments for children;
  • Snacks and bubble parties between flight sessions;
  • Outdoor activities immersed in the landscape of the Abruzzo Apennines.

Luci in volo: the evening show

The highlight of the event is Luci in volo ('Lights in Flight'), the night show usually held on Saturday evening: as darkness falls, dozens of illuminated kites rise into the Aremogna sky, creating a suggestive scene of dancing lights above the mountains. It is an experience that brings together young and old, providing a beautiful end to the day.

A weekend at high altitude

Beyond the kites, Roccaraso Vola is the perfect opportunity to spend a few days enjoying the mountains and nature. The Piano dell'Aremogna and the entire Altosangro ski area offer trails, fresh air, and some of the most beautiful views in the Central Apennines, just a few kilometers from the towns of Roccaraso, Rivisondoli, and Pescocostanzo.

Roccaraso Vola — edition 2026

The thirteenth edition of Roccaraso Vola returns to the Piano dell'Aremogna from Friday, July 31 to Sunday, August 2, 2026. Three days of kite flying, family workshops, and outdoor activities, featuring the return of the 'Luci in volo' evening show, where dozens of illuminated kites will animate the night sky of the Abruzzo mountains.
