The allegorical parade in the village of Roccagiovine, in the heart of the Lucretili Mountains

Located just over thirty-five kilometers from Rome and perched at an altitude of 520 meters on the spurs of the Lucretili Mountains, Roccagiovine is one of the smallest municipalities in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital: with just over two hundred inhabitants, a compact historic center of alleys and arches, and a panorama that descends toward the Aniene Valley. It is in this setting that the Roccagiovine Carnival is celebrated, the most popular winter festival in the area, organized by the social promotion association Insieme per Roccagiovine.
This is not a monumental carnival like those that draw crowds from across the Lazio region, but something different and, in many ways, rarer: a festival built by the inhabitants for the inhabitants, where the entire community gets involved. The common thread, as the association explains, is the desire to be together and share the joy of dressing up as a way to break the daily routine and let loose.
The centerpiece is the allegorical parade that winds through the village on the afternoon of the last Sunday of Carnival. The repertoire draws on the classic masks of the Commedia dell'Arte and Italian tradition — Arlecchino, Brighella, Pantalone, Colombina — but without rigid adherence to the past: every year, new elements are added, including current events and inventions born from the imagination of the masked groups.
Costumes and floats are largely handmade, the result of weeks of work during the winter months. The procession winds along the narrow streets of the historic center, which for a few hours become an open-air stage filled with colors, music, and confetti.
The parade culminates in Piazza Vacuna, the town's living room. The name is no coincidence: Vacuna was the ancient Sabine deity of rest and leisure, worshipped in this very territory — the Romans called the settlement Fanum Vacunae, the sanctuary of Vacuna. A Roman inscription found here also helped identify the nearby Villa of Horace, the Sabine residence of the Latin poet in Licenza.
That the most liberating festival of the year ends in the square dedicated to the goddess of rest is a coincidence that the locals love to highlight: ancient tradition and contemporary spontaneity meet in the same space.
The Roccagiovine Carnival is the ideal opportunity to discover an off-the-beaten-path corner of Lazio, just an hour's drive from the capital. Around the date of the festival, you can combine a walk in the Lucretili Mountains Regional Natural Park, a visit to the Villa of Horace in Licenza, or a tour of the other villages in the Aniene Valley — Vicovaro, Percile, Marcellina — which host their own carnivals during this same period. Those looking for the authentic atmosphere of a village festival, without crowds and without filters, will find it here, still intact.
The Roccagiovine Carnival always follows the mobile calendar of Carnival: the parade takes place on the last Sunday before Shrove Tuesday, in the afternoon. For 2026, no official communication with the date, times, and detailed program has been published yet.
The structure of the festival remains the established one: meeting of the masked groups in the historic center of Roccagiovine, an allegorical procession along the alleys of the village, and arrival in Piazza Vacuna, where the community gathers for the final part with music, entertainment for children, and Carnival sweets. Admission is free.
Those wishing to attend can check for date confirmation on the channels of the APS Insieme per Roccagiovine, the official page of the Municipality of Roccagiovine, and the Visit Val d'Aniene tourist portal.
