Ripi Carnival

A local carnival in the heart of Ciociaria

The Ripi Carnival is the most popular winter event in Ripi, a town of just over five thousand inhabitants in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio. Every year, between February and early March, the village overlooking the Valle Latina pauses its daily routine for a day entirely dedicated to allegorical floats, costumes, and music. It is the carnival in its most genuine form: where everyone knows each other and laughs together, far from the massive crowds of more famous parades, but rich in the warmth that only community festivals can produce.

The districts, the engine of the festival

Behind the event is the APS Contrade Ripane, a social promotion association that brings together the town's districts and organizes the event in collaboration with the Municipality of Ripi. It is the districts themselves that build the floats in the months leading up to the parade, working in local warehouses and garages with papier-mâché, wood, and a great deal of patience. The result is a small collection of popular imagination: cartoon characters, movie figures, and current events reinterpreted with irony. The Ripi floats are often taken beyond the municipal borders, even joining the larger parade of the Historic Carnival of Frosinone.

How the parade unfolds

The meeting point is set for the early afternoon, traditionally at 2:00 PM near the Via Meringo Alto roundabout. From there, the procession moves slowly along the town streets, accompanied by masked groups, music, and children following the floats while throwing confetti and streamers. The parade crosses the town up to the Monument area, where the party continues with entertainment and the distribution of sweets.

Frappe, struffoli, and homemade flavors

The gastronomic aspect is not just a side note: it is part of the Ciociarian carnival tradition. Frappe (also known as chiacchiere or cenci elsewhere), thin strips of fried dough dusted with powdered sugar, and struffoli, golden dough balls bound together by honey, are prepared and offered to participants. These are simple, comforting sweets that taste like home and accompany the parade from start to finish.

Ripi, a village to discover

Ripi is located on a ridge overlooking the Valle Latina, a few kilometers from Frosinone and in a strategic position between Rome and Cassino. The town preserves a compact historic center, the Vittorio Gassman Theater in Piazza Luciano Manara, and an agricultural landscape known primarily for its olive oil and the cellars carved into the tuff, which take center stage in autumn during another popular event. A festival for families

The Ripi Carnival is designed primarily for families: a short route, afternoon hours, no tickets to purchase, and a relaxed pace that allows even the youngest children to follow the entire procession without fatigue. Visitors from outside the area will find an opportunity to discover a less touristy and more authentic side of Ciociaria, where the festival is not a show to watch, but something to participate in.
