A Run Through the Woods of the Modenese Apennines

RiolunaTrail is the competitive trail running race held in Riolunato, a small municipality in the Apennines in the Province of Modena, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. Created to showcase the area's mountain trails and landscapes, it has become an eagerly awaited event for nature lovers, far from asphalt and immersed in the woods surrounding the village.

The Course

The course measures 20.5 km with an elevation gain of 950 meters. The start is from the historic center of Riolunato: from here, runners ascend along the trails that climb through beech forests and ridges to the Le Polle area, at the foot of Monte Cimone, the highest peak in the northern Apennines, and then descend back to the village. A technical loop that is accessible to all enthusiasts, offering spectacular views of the Modenese mountains.

The Spirit of the Event

Beyond the competitive aspect, RiolunaTrail is above all a village festival dedicated to the mountains and running. Since its first editions, the race has been remembered for the genuine atmosphere of the aid stations, with hot broth and craft beer awaiting athletes at the finish line. It's an opportunity to discover Riolunato, a village in the upper Scoltenna valley also known for its traditional Maggiolata (May Day celebration), and the authenticity of the Emilian Apennines.

Riolunato and Monte Cimone

Riolunato is ideally located for outdoor enthusiasts: a few kilometers away lies the Monte Cimone area (2,165 m), a destination for hikers and skiers. Le Polle, crossed by the race course, is one of the access points to the mountain and is surrounded by woods and high-altitude meadows. Running the RiolunaTrail means experiencing this environment in a single morning of sport.

Registration and Organization
