The double Carnival celebration for children and families in Rio, on the Island of Elba
The Rio Carnival is the event that brings the most cheerful atmosphere of the year to the Municipality of Rio, located on the eastern coast of the Island of Elba, in the province of Livorno, Tuscany. Rather than a grand parade of floats, this is a festival tailored specifically for children and their families, bringing life to the local villages in the heart of winter, when the island reveals its most authentic and intimate side.
The unique feature of this event is its double schedule, which involves the two historic centers of the Municipality of Rio over two different weekends. The festivities kick off in Piazza del Popolo in Rio nell'Elba, an ancient mining village perched on iron-rich hills, and continue in Piazza Mazzini in Rio Marina, the town overlooking the harbor and beaches that reflect the island's mining past. This way, the Carnival reaches both communities, highlighting the most iconic squares in the area.
The Carnival afternoons, which begin in the early afternoon, are entirely dedicated to children's entertainment. The program revolves around several key activities:
Confetti, streamers, and colorful costumes fill the squares, while parents and grandparents join the children in a shared, simple, and genuine festive atmosphere typical of island communities.
The Municipality of Rio was established in 2018 through the merger of the towns of Rio nell'Elba and Rio Marina. Initiatives like this help strengthen the bond between the two towns and nearby villages such as Cavo and Bagnaia. The Carnival thus becomes an opportunity to gather, let children play together, and bring a touch of color and warmth to the quietest months of the year, far from the summer tourist season.
Attending the Rio Carnival is also a way to discover a lesser-known side of the Island of Elba: the winter face, characterized by quiet villages, sea views, and local traditions. The island's eastern coast, with its landscape marked by ancient mining activity and striking dark-sand beaches, provides the perfect backdrop for a festival that remains, above all, a gathering for local families and those who choose to experience Elba off-season.
The Rio Carnival 2026 was divided into two festive afternoons in the Municipality of Rio, on the Island of Elba. The first event was held on Saturday, February 7, in Piazza del Popolo in Rio nell'Elba, and the second on Saturday, February 14, in Piazza Mazzini in Rio Marina.
On both days, starting at 3:00 PM, the program was dedicated to children and their families, featuring children's parties, entertainment and music, games, and snacks for everyone. A double event filled with joy, colors, and masks, to experience the Carnival even in the villages of Elba's eastern coast.
Program for both dates: children's party, entertainment and music, games, and snacks for everyone.
