The Renaissance reenactment of the village of Mondavio in Montefeltro
The Rievocazione Storica Caccia al Cinghiale (Historical Reenactment of the Boar Hunt) is the major summer event in the municipality of Mondavio, a fortified village in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the heart of the Marche region. Founded in 1959, it is one of the longest-running and most beloved costume events in the area: every year, during Ferragosto, it brings the historic centre and the famous Rocca Roveresca back to the atmosphere of the 15th-century Renaissance court.
The festival celebrates the arrival of Duke Giovanni della Rovere in Mondavio in 1474. He was the nephew of Pope Sixtus IV and became Lord of Senigallia and the Vicariate of Mondavio. Together with Duchess Giovanna da Montefeltro, the Duke officially took possession of the territory: the reenactment meticulously reconstructs court life, civil and military ceremonies, solemn oaths, and the splendours of the era, with historical costumes, armed guards, musicians, and ladies.
The programme unfolds along the narrow streets of the village and is divided into several moments that have become traditional:
What makes the reenactment unique is its setting: Mondavio is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, and its Rocca Roveresca, designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, is one of the masterpieces of Renaissance military architecture, perfectly preserved. The walls, walkways, and keep become the natural backdrop for three days of festivities that combine history, Marche gastronomy, and entertainment.
The event is promoted and organised by the Associazione Pro Loco IAT Mondavio, which is responsible for the staging, costumes, and entire programme each year.
The 64th edition (1959-2026) of the Rievocazione Storica Caccia al Cinghiale will animate Mondavio from August 13th to 15th, 2026, with the traditional Bivacco in the moat of the Rocca starting from August 12th, at 8:30 PM.
The programme renews the classic appointments of the event: the sumptuous Renaissance Banquet in the Franciscan cloister in the presence of the Duke and Duchess, the historical procession in Piazza Matteotti, archery and crossbow demonstrations in Piazza Della Rovere, the Palio delle contrade, ancient crafts and Renaissance arts with workshops along the streets of the centre, taverns with typical cuisine, and travelling shows featuring jugglers, acrobats, musicians, minstrels, dancers, and falconers.
Grand evening finale with the Sound and Light show and fireworks display. Information and bookings at Pro Loco IAT Mondavio.
By car: from the A14 motorway, take the Marotta-Mondolfo exit, then follow signs for Mondavio (approx. 25 km inland). From the Fano-Grosseto dual carriageway (E78), take the Lucrezia or San Lorenzo in Campo exit.
By train: nearest stations are Marotta-Mondolfo or Fano on the Adriatic line, then continue by bus or car.
Admission to some events (particularly the Renaissance Banquet) requires booking. Bookings and information can be obtained from Pro Loco IAT Mondavio (tel. +39 0721 977758) or on the official website.
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes for the cobbled streets of the village and arriving early to enjoy the evening shows in Piazza Matteotti and Piazza Della Rovere.
