International Folk Music Festival of the Giugno Fasanese
Rhythms and Sounds of the Mediterranean is the international folk music festival that brings Piazza Ciaia to life every year in the center of Fasano, in the province of Brindisi. Born as an evolution of the historic square performance that concluded the day of La Scamiciata, the event has become one of the most anticipated highlights of the Giugno Fasanese, the rich calendar of civil, religious, and cultural events that accompanies the Apulian city at the start of summer.
The festival celebrates the encounter between peoples, stories, and musical traditions through the universal language of dance and melody. Folk groups from various regions of Italy and other countries of the Mediterranean basin take the stage: period songs, lively dances, tambourines, and costumes rich in embroidery and color restore the living memory of folk cultures to the audience. Each evening is a journey between Puglia, Southern Italy, and the shores of the Mediterranean, where traditional oral music becomes a bridge between generations and communities.
At the heart of the organization is the Gruppo Ricerca Cultura Popolare I Canti del Faso, a Fasanese association active for over fifty years and now in its fifth generation of tradition-bearers. The group, which always closes the evening, is entrusted with the task of returning the songs, ballads, and historical memory of the Apulian land to the square, inextricably linking the event to the celebration of the city's identity. The organization is carried out in collaboration with the Giugno Fasanese Committee.
The festival takes place immediately after the arrival of the historical pageant of La Scamiciata, the re-enactment that recalls the city's history and parades through the streets of Fasano before concluding in the square. The sequence of the historical pageant followed by folk music makes the evening a choral moment, capable of attracting thousands of people, including residents and visitors. Admission is free and open to all, in the true spirit of a community festival.
Located between the Itria Valley and the Adriatic coast, in the province of Brindisi, Fasano is one of the most fascinating destinations in Puglia: trulli, masserie (fortified farmhouses), the archaeological area of Egnazia, and the nearby Selva offer an ideal setting for those visiting the city during the festival. 'Rhythms and Sounds of the Mediterranean' is the perfect opportunity to combine an evening of great folklore with the discovery of a territory with a strong identity.
