The ultramarathon relay race along the Adige River, from the springs of Resia to the sea
The Resia Rosolina Relay is one of Italy's most evocative long-distance relay challenges: a 430-kilometer running journey that traces the entire course of the Adige river, from the springs of Resia in the municipality of Curon Venosta (Graun im Vinschgau), in the province of Bolzano, to the mouth of Rosolina Mare in the province of Rovigo. The start is set in one of the most iconic landscapes in South Tyrol, on the shores of Lake Resia, dominated by the famous submerged bell tower of the old village of Curon.
The route is divided into 40 stages of approximately 10 km each, which teams tackle in a relay format: each runner covers multiple non-consecutive segments, alternating with teammates at exchange points where they pass a baton equipped with an electronic tracker. The race takes place non-stop, day and night, and about 95% of the route runs along the cycle paths that line the Adige, making it as challenging as it is scenic.
From the Vinschgau Valley, the relay descends along the Adige valley, crossing the provinces of Bolzano and Trento in Trentino-South Tyrol, before entering the Veneto region, passing through the provinces of Verona, Padua, Venice, and Rovigo, until the finish line at Rosolina Mare, at the gates of the Po Delta. It is a true geographical narrative of the Adige, connecting glaciers and alpine villages to the plains and the Adriatic lagoon.
Organized by the ASD VRM Team in collaboration with local sports clubs from South Tyrol and Veneto, the Resia Rosolina Relay has become a beloved event for trail running, ultramarathon, and team racing enthusiasts over the years. The challenge is not only athletic but also a test of team spirit: completing the 430 km requires organization, endurance, and cohesion among team members.
The municipality of Curon Venosta, in South Tyrol, offers the ideal setting for the start: Lake Resia with its submerged bell tower is one of the most photographed images of the Italian Alps, and the area is a popular destination for hiking, cycling, and outdoor sports along the Resia Pass, on the border with Austria and Switzerland.
The 7th edition of the Resia Rosolina Relay is scheduled for September 4-5, 2026, confirmed in the national calendar of the Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL). The relay follows the traditional 430 km route along the Adige River, from the springs of Resia (Curon Venosta, province of Bolzano) to the mouth of Rosolina Mare (Rovigo).
At the moment, the full program, including precise times for the 40 stages and registration details, has not yet been fully published. For updated regulations and participation methods, please refer to the official website resiarosolinarelay.it and the organizing body, ASD VRM Team.
