The June 2nd celebration in the Giambellino district, between the Constitution and community
The Republic Day celebration for Municipality 6 of Milan is a local event: instead of being limited to official ceremonies, it brings the meaning of June 2nd directly to the citizens, at Alan Kurdi Park, at Via Giambellino 129. The 2026 edition falls in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Republic, born from the referendum of June 2, 1946, with particular attention to the right to vote won by women.
The underlying idea is to bring democratic values out of institutional settings and return them to the community. At the heart of the evening is the presentation of the Constitution to newly naturalized Italian citizens, a symbolic gesture that links welcome with citizenship. This moment is surrounded by a program of conviviality and culture, designed to engage all generations of the neighborhood.
The celebration includes a free community pizza party, a screening of the film C'è ancora domani by Paola Cortellesi — a work that addresses themes of emancipation and women's rights, in line with the event's theme — and an exhibition dedicated to the Italian Constitution. It is an evening that intertwines historical memory, civic participation, and neighborhood social life.
The event is organized by Municipality 6 of Milan together with Circolo delle Quinte. Giambellino is one of Milan's historic working-class neighborhoods, and this celebration enhances its sense of community, transforming a national anniversary into a moment of concrete interaction between residents, new citizens, and local associations.
