About Renaissance Festivals

The Renaissance Festivals of Castel del Rio bring back to life the splendor of the 16th century and the glories of the Alidosi Lordship. Founded in 1981, they are the most important event in the village: a grand historical procession with about 400 costumed figures, palios, falconry, jesters, acrobats, and dancers animate the village streets. Amidst the historical market, military encampments, and dinners based on ancient Renaissance recipes, the festival culminates with the tradition of the Witch and fireworks at the picturesque Alidosi Bridge.

A Dive into the Alidosian 16th Century

The Renaissance Festivals of Castel del Rio are one of the most beloved historical reenactment events in the Bolognese Apennines. Every year, the village in the Santerno Valley, in the province of Bologna and in Emilia-Romagna, travels back in time to revive the atmospheres and glories of the 16th century, during the ancient splendor of the Alidosi Lordship, the family that dominated this territory and left the most visible mark on the monumental Palazzo Alidosi.

History of the Event

Born in the early 1980s (the first edition dates back to 1981), the festival has grown over the decades to achieve national importance among reenactment enthusiasts. Today, it is organized by the Associazione Culturale Alidosiana with the patronage of the Municipality of Castel del Rio, the Emilia-Romagna Region, and the Metropolitan City of Bologna, and involves the entire community: hundreds of inhabitants dress up as nobles, ladies, soldiers, and commoners to bring the village life of the Alidosi era back to life through music, food, and traditions.

What to See

  • The Historical Procession: About 400 figures in glittering Renaissance costumes parade through the village streets and around Palazzo Alidosi.
  • Military Encampments and Historical Market: Period reconstructions, demonstrations of ancient medieval and Renaissance crafts, artisan shops, and themed stalls.
  • Live Performances: Falconry, jesters, street performers, acrobats, and dancers animate the squares and corners of the village.
  • Archery and Games: Areas dedicated to demonstrations and spaces for children with themed workshops and games.
  • The Witch and Fireworks: The festival culminates with the traditional procession of the Witch and her burning, followed by a fireworks display over the Ponte Alidosi, the elegant 16th-century donkey-back bridge, the symbol of the town.

Renaissance Flavors

Alongside the performances, gastronomy holds a place of honor: during the festival days, you can enjoy dinners based on tasty and authentic Renaissance recipes, in a setting that recreates the convivial atmospheres of the time. It's also an opportunity to discover the typical products of the valley, especially the famous marrone (chestnut) of Castel del Rio.

Why It's Worth It

With its meticulously detailed historical reenactment, the natural scenery of the Apennine village, and a tradition spanning over forty years, the Renaissance Festivals of Castel del Rio offer an engaging experience for the whole family, capable of uniting spectacle, history, and local identity in one grand event.

Renaissance Festivals — edition 2026

The 42nd edition of the Renaissance Festivals of Castel del Rio is scheduled for Sunday, July 12, 2026, in one single grand day of reenactment. The village in the Santerno Valley will once again don the attire of the 16th-century Alidosi era with the historical procession, encampments, shows, and the unmissable burning of the Witch at the Ponte Alidosi.

The 42nd edition of the Renaissance Festivals of Castel del Rio will take place on Sunday, July 12, 2026. Unlike recent editions spread over two days, the 2026 event will be concentrated into a single day, as confirmed by local press and the Municipality's event calendar.

The detailed program with times, shows, and guests has not yet been published by the Associazione Culturale Alidosiana. However, the historical elements of the festival are expected: the historical procession with costumed figures, military encampments, the historical market, falconry exhibitions, performances by jesters and acrobats, and the traditional burning of the Witch with fireworks over the Ponte Alidosi. For the definitive program, please refer to the official website festerinascimentali.it and the festival's Facebook page.
