The Lordship of the Alidosi revives in the Apennine village of Bologna
The Renaissance Festivals of Castel del Rio are one of the most beloved historical reenactment events in the Bolognese Apennines. Every year, the village in the Santerno Valley, in the province of Bologna and in Emilia-Romagna, travels back in time to revive the atmospheres and glories of the 16th century, during the ancient splendor of the Alidosi Lordship, the family that dominated this territory and left the most visible mark on the monumental Palazzo Alidosi.
Born in the early 1980s (the first edition dates back to 1981), the festival has grown over the decades to achieve national importance among reenactment enthusiasts. Today, it is organized by the Associazione Culturale Alidosiana with the patronage of the Municipality of Castel del Rio, the Emilia-Romagna Region, and the Metropolitan City of Bologna, and involves the entire community: hundreds of inhabitants dress up as nobles, ladies, soldiers, and commoners to bring the village life of the Alidosi era back to life through music, food, and traditions.
Alongside the performances, gastronomy holds a place of honor: during the festival days, you can enjoy dinners based on tasty and authentic Renaissance recipes, in a setting that recreates the convivial atmospheres of the time. It's also an opportunity to discover the typical products of the valley, especially the famous marrone (chestnut) of Castel del Rio.
With its meticulously detailed historical reenactment, the natural scenery of the Apennine village, and a tradition spanning over forty years, the Renaissance Festivals of Castel del Rio offer an engaging experience for the whole family, capable of uniting spectacle, history, and local identity in one grand event.
The 42nd edition of the Renaissance Festivals of Castel del Rio will take place on Sunday, July 12, 2026. Unlike recent editions spread over two days, the 2026 event will be concentrated into a single day, as confirmed by local press and the Municipality's event calendar.
The detailed program with times, shows, and guests has not yet been published by the Associazione Culturale Alidosiana. However, the historical elements of the festival are expected: the historical procession with costumed figures, military encampments, the historical market, falconry exhibitions, performances by jesters and acrobats, and the traditional burning of the Witch with fireworks over the Ponte Alidosi. For the definitive program, please refer to the official website festerinascimentali.it and the festival's Facebook page.
