A Dive into the Alidosian 16th Century

The Renaissance Festivals of Castel del Rio are one of the most beloved historical reenactment events in the Bolognese Apennines. Every year, the village in the Santerno Valley, in the province of Bologna and in Emilia-Romagna, travels back in time to revive the atmospheres and glories of the 16th century, during the ancient splendor of the Alidosi Lordship, the family that dominated this territory and left the most visible mark on the monumental Palazzo Alidosi.

History of the Event

Born in the early 1980s (the first edition dates back to 1981), the festival has grown over the decades to achieve national importance among reenactment enthusiasts. Today, it is organized by the Associazione Culturale Alidosiana with the patronage of the Municipality of Castel del Rio, the Emilia-Romagna Region, and the Metropolitan City of Bologna, and involves the entire community: hundreds of inhabitants dress up as nobles, ladies, soldiers, and commoners to bring the village life of the Alidosi era back to life through music, food, and traditions.

• The Historical Procession: About 400 figures in glittering Renaissance costumes parade through the village streets and around Palazzo Alidosi.
• Military Encampments and Historical Market: Period reconstructions, demonstrations of ancient medieval and Renaissance crafts, artisan shops, and themed stalls.
• Live Performances: Falconry, jesters, street performers, acrobats, and dancers animate the squares and corners of the village.
• Archery and Games: Areas dedicated to demonstrations and spaces for children with themed workshops and games.
• The Witch and Fireworks: The festival culminates with the traditional procession of the Witch and her burning, followed by a fireworks display over the Ponte Alidosi, the elegant 16th-century donkey-back bridge, the symbol of the town.
