The international marathon of the City of the Tricolour, between the historic centre and the Reggio countryside
The Reggio Emilia Marathon — City of the Tricolour is the most important running event in the Emilian capital, organised by the company Tricolore Sport Marathon ASD. Every year, in mid-December, the streets of Reggio Emilia, in Emilia-Romagna, fill with athletes from all over Italy and abroad for one of the most beloved marathons in Northern Italy. The name recalls a historical primacy of the city: it was here that the Italian Tricolour was born in 1797, and the race proudly carries this identity.
The event offers three distances designed for every type of participant:
The start and finish are located in the historic centre, along Corso Garibaldi, concluding in the Piazza della Vittoria area.
The course is appreciated by marathon runners for its smoothness: after a loop through the historic centre among the squares and streets of the heart of Reggio Emilia, the route opens up towards the Reggio countryside, touching hamlets like Montecavolo, from which the half marathon starts. The flat profile and sustained paces make the race an ideal opportunity for personal bests, in a typically Emilian landscape.
Now in its latest editions and with a thirty-year history, the Reggio Emilia Marathon combines sport with the enhancement of the territory and its excellent products, as evidenced by the Parmigiano Reggiano Trophy associated with the event. The event involves the entire city, with the Marathon Centre set up for bib collection and numerous side initiatives. It is an event that, beyond the competition, celebrates the conviviality and identity of the Reggio community, under the banner of the Tricolour.
The Reggio Emilia Marathon — City of the Tricolour returns on Sunday, December 13, 2026, in the heart of Reggio Emilia. The event confirms its format with three distances: the competitive marathon of 42.195 km, the Tricolour Half Marathon (approx. 21 km), and the non-competitive Run4Charity walk of 4.1 km, open to all and dedicated to solidarity. The start and finish are set in the historic centre, along Corso Garibaldi.
Registration is online on the official website. The standard fee for the marathon is 42 euros, while the half marathon starts at 30 euros. There is a Valentine's Day promotion (February 1-15), with reduced fees of 32-37 euros for the marathon and 25 euros for the half marathon, by sending a photo according to the organisation's instructions. Bib collection takes place at the Marathon Centre in the days preceding the race.
The official start times for the 2026 edition will be published by the organisation in the weeks preceding the race.
Reggio Emilia is easily reachable by train: the historic station is in the city centre, while the high-speed station Reggio Emilia AV Mediopadana is served by high-speed trains on the Milan-Bologna line. By car, the Reggio Emilia motorway exit on the A1 is a few minutes from the centre. The start in Corso Garibaldi is reachable on foot from the central station.
