The climb from Bormio to Stelvio Pass
Re Stelvio Mapei is one of the most iconic sporting events in Alta Valtellina. The race starts from Bormio, in the province of Sondrio, and climbs up to Stelvio Pass, at 2,758 metres altitude, along the hairpin bends that have written the history of the Giro d'Italia and international cycling. It is a legendary climb, among the toughest and most spectacular in the Alps, attracting enthusiasts from all over Europe every year.
The unique feature of Re Stelvio Mapei is its format, which tests two disciplines on the same route: the cycling granfondo and the uphill running race. In total, the event attracts over 3,000 participants, between those tackling the climb on pedals and those running it, in a mix that makes the event unique in the panorama of alpine races.
Now in its 41st edition, Re Stelvio Mapei confirms itself as an international-level event, further enhanced by the 2026 Olympic season which sees Bormio among the host locations for the Winter Games. The setting of the Stelvio National Park and the route's altitude profile make the race an unforgettable experience for athletes and spectators alike.
The 2026 edition of Re Stelvio Mapei, the 41st, is scheduled for Sunday, July 12, with the start from the centre of Bormio (SO) and the finish at Stelvio Pass. The historic climb pits cyclists and runners against each other on the same legendary ascent, with over 3,000 participants expected.
The event is part of the 2026 Olympic season, which features Bormio prominently, further enhancing its international appeal.
