The festival celebrating the violet artichoke, the signature product of the Ramacca plains
The Ramacca Violet Artichoke Festival is one of the most cherished gastronomic events in the province of Catania. Every year in April, the town of Ramacca celebrates the product that has always defined its identity: the Ramacca violet artichoke, a vegetable with a brilliant purple hue and compact leaves, grown using traditional methods in the fertile plains surrounding the town.
The artichoke harvest takes place between February and April, involving entire families from the Calatino area, who are guardians of agricultural knowledge passed down through generations. The festival was created to promote this local supply chain and the region's agri-food excellence, blending product promotion, culture, and community in the historic center, particularly between Piazza Umberto and Largo Livatino.
Throughout the event, the town comes alive with food stalls where the artichoke is served in countless ways—roasted, fried, stuffed, in soups, on pizzas, in focaccias, and even in surprising desserts. Alongside the food, the program features live cooking demonstrations, guided tastings, craft markets, live music, folk groups, street performers, and evening shows.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover the town's cultural heritage: guided tours are available for the Archaeological Park, the Archaeological Museum, the "M° Bruno Castronuovo" Band Museum, and the Town Hall, as well as nature trails like the Gypsum Crystal Path. It is a complete experience that weaves together gastronomy, history, and popular traditions in the heart of inland Sicily.
The event is traditionally held over two consecutive weekends in April, with evening openings of the stalls and a packed calendar of events that culminates on Sundays with marching bands, cooking competitions, and performances.
The 34th edition of the Ramacca Violet Artichoke Festival was held over two consecutive weekends: April 10-12 and April 17-19, 2026. The opening ceremony took place on Friday, April 10 at 6:00 PM, with the traditional ribbon-cutting in the presence of civil, military, and religious authorities, accompanied by the marching band and the opening of the food and craft stalls.
The days featured tastings of the Ramacca violet artichoke in all its forms, cooking shows, musical and theatrical performances, folk exhibitions, activities for families and children, as well as guided tours of the Archaeological Park, the Archaeological Museum, the Band Museum, and the Town Hall.
The events were concentrated in the historic center, particularly in Piazza Umberto and Largo Livatino, with evening openings of the stalls.
