The Carnival of Santo Stefano Quisquina

The Quisquinese Carnival is one of the most anticipated winter events in Santo Stefano Quisquina, a town in the Province of Agrigento located in the heart of the Sicani Mountains, in Sicily. For a few days, the small village transforms into an open-air stage, where the Carnival tradition is renewed thanks to the dedication of local associations and volunteers who bring the festival to life each year.

The allegorical float, the absolute star

The highlight of the event is the parade of the allegorical float, built entirely by hand by local groups. The float, often accompanied by an ironic title in the Sicilian dialect that references fantastical characters and popular satire, travels through the streets of the historic center amidst music, dancing, and showers of confetti. Masks, costumed groups, and many children gather around the float in a festive atmosphere that involves the entire Quisquinese community.

A community celebration

Beyond the parades, the Quisquinese Carnival offers moments designed for the little ones: parties and entertainment in various town venues, such as the municipal theater, make the event suitable for all ages. The strong participatory element is the hallmark of this Carnival: it is not an event imposed from above, but a celebration built from the ground up, where every group contributes with creativity and volunteer work.

Santo Stefano Quisquina, known for its connection to the cult of Saint Rosalia and its mountain landscapes, welcomes visitors with the hospitality typical of Sicilian villages. When it takes place

The event is held during the Carnival season, towards the end of winter, with parades concentrated on the days surrounding Shrove Sunday and Shrove Tuesday. The dates vary from year to year according to the liturgical calendar, and the program is usually announced by the Municipality of Santo Stefano Quisquina in the weeks leading up to the event.
