Open wineries in the Colli Tortonesi to discover Timorasso
Quatar Pass in Derthona Timurass is one of the most beloved wine events in south-eastern Piedmont, dedicated to Timorasso, the native grape variety that produces Derthona, one of Italy's great white wines. The format is that of a widespread open-cellar event: for an entire day, over fifty producers from the Tortona area throw open their doors to welcome visitors, share their craft, and offer tastings of the many nuances of this extraordinary wine, directly at the source.
The small village of Avolasca, in the Province of Alessandria, Piedmont, serves as one of the event's nerve centers. Here, at Villa Cerruti, one of the four communal tasting stations is set up, allowing you to comfortably sample various labels in a single location. Avolasca, nestled among the vineyards of the Tortona hills, perfectly embodies the spirit of this event: territory, hospitality, and wine culture.
With your participation fee, you receive the official tasting glass and a convenient glass holder bag, which will accompany you throughout the day. From there, you are free to build your own itinerary among the participating wineries, driving along the suggested routes and stopping at the four communal tasting stations set up across the territory:
Tastings are unlimited at all participating wineries and communal stations: a unique opportunity to meet the winemakers in person and explore the many interpretations of Derthona.
Quatar Pass is also a complete food and wine experience, where Timorasso meets local traditional dishes. In Avolasca, the day continues with the Quinto Pass, the convivial gathering that closes the event with great food, fine wine, and plenty of cheer. The event has long been a benchmark for enthusiasts and members of associations like Slow Food, AIS, FISAR, and ONAV, yet it remains open to anyone wishing to discover one of Italy's oenological gems in its native landscape.
The 14th edition of Quatar Pass in Derthona Timurass was held on Sunday, May 17, 2026, confirming the open-cellar format across the Colli Tortonesi. Over fifty producers welcomed visitors for a day entirely dedicated to Derthona, the great white wine made from Timorasso grapes. In Avolasca, at Villa Cerruti, the communal tasting station served as the hub of the event, while in the evening, the Quinto Pass concluded the day with food and karaoke.
Accreditation points for collecting the official glass and bag were Fermento Hub in Tortona and Cantina Ezio Poggio in Vignole Borbera.
Avolasca is located in the Colli Tortonesi, in the Province of Alessandria. By car, it is easily accessible from the Tortona motorway exit (A7/A21), continuing along the hilly roads towards the village. A car is essentially necessary to move between the wineries and the various tasting stations scattered across the area.
The accreditation points where you can collect your kit (glass and bag) are Fermento Hub in Tortona and Cantina Ezio Poggio in Vignole Borbera. The participation fee includes unlimited tastings at all wineries and communal stations.
Wear comfortable shoes, arrange for a designated driver, and take the time to follow the suggested routes: the beauty of Quatar Pass lies in the slow discovery of the territory, one cellar at a time.
