The fresh spring cheese of the Lucanian Dolomites
With the arrival of spring, in Castelmezzano, in the Lucanian Dolomites in the Province of Potenza, an event dedicated to one of the most genuine products of the pastoral tradition is renewed: quagliata, the fresh curdled cheese, with its delicate flavor and soft consistency. The Quagliata Festival traditionally takes place on the first Sunday of May, when the spring milk is richest and most fragrant.
The festival celebrates the ancient bond between Castelmezzano and sheep farming, an activity that has characterized the life of these mountain villages for centuries. During the day, quagliata is prepared and offered for tasting along with other flavors of Lucanian peasant cuisine, in an atmosphere of popular celebration that brings together residents and visitors. It is a simple and authentic opportunity to discover a product little known outside the region, but deeply rooted in the local gastronomic culture.
Castelmezzano, nestled among the spires of the Lucanian Dolomites and overlooking the Gallipoli Cognato Regional Park, offers the ideal setting for a spring Sunday of taste and nature. Amidst the flavors of quagliata, walks through the village, and the breathtaking scenery of the surrounding rocks, the festival is an invitation to experience inland Basilicata in the sweetest season of the year.
In 2026, Castelmezzano will again celebrate the Quagliata Festival on the first Sunday of May (around May 3rd). The definitive date will be announced by the organizers in the weeks prior.
