About Sacred Mysteries of Faggiano

Every Good Friday, as dusk falls, Faggiano relives one of the oldest and most deeply felt rites of the Apulian Holy Week: the Procession of the Sacred Mysteries. Since 1820, without interruption, seven 18th-century papier-mâché statues—the work of sculptor Pietro Paolo Pinca—are carried on shoulders through the town streets by the confreres, preceded by the somber sound of the 'troccola'. A slow and solemn procession that recounts, scene by scene, the Passion and death of Christ, blending popular devotion with Baroque art.

The Procession of the Sacred Mysteries of Faggiano

In the small town of Faggiano, in the province of Taranto, Good Friday is no ordinary evening. As daylight fades, the town gathers around one of the most intense rites of the Apulian Holy Week: the Procession of the Sacred Mysteries. A procession that has taken place every year since 1820, never once interrupted, representing the devotional soul of this village in the Ionian Puglia, just a few kilometers from the provincial capital of Taranto.

Seven statues to recount the Passion

At the heart of the procession are the seven papier-mâché statues depicting the key moments of the Passion and death of Jesus Christ, arranged in the chronological sequence dictated by the Gospel. The sculptures are the work of Pietro Paolo Pinca (1758-1832), a master papier-mâché artist from Francavilla Fontana active between the Taranto and Brindisi areas: statues that follow the traditional iconography of sacred statuary, with drapery modeled in the Baroque style. Crafted from papier-mâché, preserved and restored over time, they constitute an authentic historical and artistic heritage of the territory.

The procession, the 'troccola', and the confreres

The procession departs from the Mother Church of Maria SS. Assunta, the town's main church, carried on shoulders by confreres in the ritual attire of the Confraternities of the Rosary and the Carmine. Leading the procession is the troccola, a wooden instrument with iron handles that, when shaken, produces a dry, somber sound: it calls for silence and recalls the martyrdom. The pace is deliberately slow and rhythmic, almost suspended, as the statues move through the center streets amidst a growing crowd of faithful and onlookers.

A tradition spanning over two centuries

The organization has always been entrusted to the Confraternity of the Madonna del Rosario (the Congrega del Rosario), an association whose first statutory rules officially date back to 1667, although the confraternal group was already formed in 1647. The procession in its current form began in 1820: in 2025, the 205th edition was celebrated, confirming an uninterrupted continuity that makes the Sacred Mysteries of Faggiano one of the most precious testimonies of popular religiosity in the province of Taranto and all of Puglia.

Why it is worth experiencing

Witnessing the Sacred Mysteries means connecting with an authentic Puglia, far from mass tourism circuits. It is a rite that unites faith, memory, and art: the charm of the ancient papier-mâché statues, the hypnotic rhythm of the 'troccola', and the recollection of an entire town accompanying the Christ of the Mysteries along its streets. An experience to be lived with respect, in the silence that this Taranto Good Friday has managed to preserve for over two centuries.

Sacred Mysteries of Faggiano — edition 2026

The Procession of the Sacred Mysteries is renewed every year in Faggiano on Good Friday, when the seven 18th-century papier-mâché statues parade through the historic center streets at dusk. The rite preserves the structure handed down for over two centuries: evening departure from the Mother Church of Maria SS. Assunta, a slow procession marked by the sound of the 'troccola' and carried on the shoulders of the confreres. The detailed program and official times for this edition have not been released on a dedicated channel.

For this new edition as well, the Procession of the Sacred Mysteries of Faggiano follows the liturgical calendar of Holy Week and takes place on Good Friday in the evening, departing from the Mother Church of Maria SS. Assunta.

The procession maintains its established character: the seven papier-mâché statues by Pietro Paolo Pinca, the 'troccola' opening the procession, the confreres of the Confraternities of the Rosary and the Carmine, and the slow, solemn pace along the town streets. The detailed schedule and any route changes have not yet been published on official channels.
