The Good Friday rite amidst the medieval cobblestones of the Erice village
The Procession of the Mysteries of Erice is one of the most intense rites of the Sicilian Holy Week. It takes place every year on the afternoon of Good Friday in the historic center of the Municipality of Erice, a stunning medieval village perched at nearly 750 meters on Mount San Giuliano, in the Province of Trapani, Sicily. The origins of the rite likely date back to the mid-16th century, while the current form of the procession stabilized during the 18th and 19th centuries.
At the heart of the event are the seven sacred groups depicting the key moments of the Passion of Christ: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Flagellation, the Crowning with Thorns, the Ascent to Calvary, the Crucifix, the Urn, and the Addolorata (Our Lady of Sorrows), a poignant image of the Virgin wrapped in a black mantle that closes the procession. These are 18th-century works made of wood, canvas, and glue, crafted by skilled artisans from Trapani and preserved in their original integrity, partly because Erice was spared from the bombings of the Second World War.
Compared to the more famous Mysteries of Trapani, the groups of Erice are smaller and have lower bases, specifically designed to navigate the ancient cobblestones and steep climbs of the village. Here, the floats do not perform the typical Trapani annacata (swaying movement), but advance with a more measured and rapid pace, supported by the bearers' forks. The procession is led by confreres wearing traditional white tunics embroidered in red, while the brass band accompanies the entire route with its funeral marches.
In the days leading up to Good Friday, the evocative Scinnuta takes place, a preparatory rite during which the sacred groups are carried on shoulders and arranged along the nave of the church of San Giuliano, ready for the procession. It is an intimate moment, deeply felt by the Erice community, which devoutly guards these images of extraordinary artistic and religious value.
The procession starts from the church of San Giuliano and winds through the most picturesque points of the town: from the Balio staircase to the descent towards Porta Trapani, from the Cathedral to the stop in front of the Town Hall, where the lined-up groups offer a rare and beautiful sight. The procession then continues along Via Vittorio Emanuele, passing the monastery of the Santissimo Salvatore and heading towards the church of San Martino, before returning to the starting church. Witnessing the passage of the Mysteries through the silent alleys of Erice, often shrouded in sea mist, is an experience that blends faith, history, and popular tradition.
The 2026 Procession of the Mysteries of Erice was held on Friday, April 3, the day of Good Friday. The procession departed at 2:30 PM from the church of San Giuliano, winding through the most picturesque spots of the village: the Balio staircase, the descent towards Porta Trapani, the Cathedral, and the stop in front of the Town Hall scheduled for 6:00 PM, where the seven lined-up groups offered a vision of great intensity.
The preparatory rite of the Scinnuta took place on Tuesday, March 31, in the church of San Giuliano. The procession was accompanied along the paved streets of the historic center by the brass band with its funeral marches. The 18th-century sculptural groups, depicting the moments of the Passion of Christ, returned to the church around 7:30 PM.
Erice can be reached by car from Trapani along the provincial road, or via the cable car that connects Trapani to the village. It is advisable to park in areas outside the historic center, which is closed to traffic during the procession, and continue on foot.
The procession takes place every year on Good Friday, departing in the early afternoon from the church of San Giuliano.
Participation in the procession is free and open to all. Comfortable clothing is recommended for the paved and uphill streets, along with a respectful attitude towards the religious nature of the event.
