The Good Friday rite in Manduria, featuring Sacred Mysteries and Lecce papier-mâché
In the heart of Salento, Good Friday in Manduria (province of Taranto, Puglia) is marked by one of the oldest and most attended rites of the Messapian Holy Week: the Procession of the Mysteries. As evening falls, the historic center transforms into a grand sacred theater where the Sacred Mysteries—the statuary groups representing the stages of Christ's Passion—parade slowly between two lines of a crowd gathered in silence.
The origins of the rite date back to the 16th century, when the Chapter of the Collegiate Church carried the ancient wooden statue of the Dead Christ, the so-called "Sacred Corpse," in procession, accompanied by the sound of flutes and drums. In the 18th century, the Archconfraternities of the Sacrament and of Death—the latter active since 1716—made the celebration more solemn. A long 19th-century dispute over the right to lead the procession was resolved only in 1889 by the Holy See in favor of the Collegiate Chapter.
The most precious core of the procession consists of the papier-mâché statues commissioned at the end of the 19th century from Giuseppe Manzo (1849-1942), one of the most famous papier-mâché masters from Lecce. To him, we owe the Christ in the Garden of Olives, Christ at the Column, the Ecce Homo, and Christ Carrying the Cross. These works are joined by the wooden Pietà, the Meeting of Jesus and Mary, and Christ on the Cross, in addition to the ancient Dead Christ and the venerated Our Lady of Sorrows.
The procession starts from the Mother Church and returns there after crossing the streets of the center: via Marco Gatti, via G. L. Marugj, via XX Settembre, the Municipal Villa, via per Maruggio, via Nicotera, via Lamarmora, via Bell'Acqua, piazza Sant'Angelo, via Roma, Corso XX Settembre, and piazza Garibaldi, where a stop for prayer and meditation is held. At the end, the effigies return to their respective churches, while Our Lady of Sorrows is taken to the Church of Santa Lucia.
The Procession of the Mysteries of Manduria is distinguished by its composure: the confreres parade with their hoods up, without flagellants or theatrical displays. The procession is accompanied by the civic band, which alternates the faithful's chants with classic Stations of the Cross hymns, including compositions by Saint Alphonsus Liguori. Once, children would light the way with paper lanterns and shake trenule (ratchets), creating that collected and spiritual atmosphere that still characterizes the night of Good Friday in Manduria today.
The Good Friday rite in Manduria was renewed on April 3, 2026. At 8:00 PM, the procession of the Sacred Mysteries departed from the Mother Church, crossing via Marco Gatti, via XX Settembre, the Municipal Villa, via Roma, and piazza Garibaldi, with the usual stop for prayer and meditation before returning. Confraternities and parishes accompanied the effigies in an atmosphere of great popular participation.
