Eighty living tableaux of Holy Week in the heart of Sicily
The Procession of the Mysteries in Montelepre, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo nestled in the mountains of western Sicily, is one of the island's oldest and most iconic religious manifestations. Its origins date back to 1741, and it has been renewed every year on Palm Sunday, marking the beginning of Holy Week. This is not merely a procession, but a true sacred living representation that involves the entire community.
The heart of the event consists of eighty living tableaux winding through the streets of the historic center. The scenes tell the entire story of salvation, from the Old to the New Testament: from the Creation of the world to the expulsion from Paradise, and through the great biblical episodes leading to Jesus' journey to Mount Calvary. Bringing this choral fresco to life are about four hundred participantsโmen, women, and childrenโdressed in meticulously detailed costumes.
What makes the Montelepre procession unique in Sicily is the presence of numerous live animals accompanying the tableaux: rabbits, doves, sheep, goats, dogs, and horses frame the most important and expressive scenes, restoring an archaic and evocative atmosphere. The preparation involves the whole town: according to tradition, many of the participants portraying biblical figures let their beards grow starting from Ash Wednesday, while others have worn their hair long since the previous year.
Organized by the Pro Loco Tourist Association of Montelepre with the patronage of the Municipality and the collaboration of local parishes and associations, the Procession of the Mysteries attracts thousands of visitors from all over Sicily every year. It is an event rich in culture, faith, spirituality, and popular piety, where citizens become the absolute protagonists, passing down a rite that blends religious devotion and the territory's cultural heritage from generation to generation.
The procession winds through the characteristic narrow streets of Montelepre's historic center, starting from the Mother Church in the late afternoon of Palm Sunday. Admission is completely free, and the event takes place entirely outdoors within the village streets.
The 2026 Procession of the Mysteries was held on Sunday, March 29, Palm Sunday, starting at 4:30 PM and concluding in the evening, around 8:00 PM. The characteristic narrow streets of Montelepre's historic center provided the backdrop for the eighty living tableaux that retraced the Holy Scriptures, from the Creation to Jesus' journey to Calvary.
As per tradition, about four hundred participants โ adults, teenagers, and children โ took part in the representation, accompanied by live animals (rabbits, doves, sheep, goats, dogs, and horses). The event, organized by the Pro Loco of Montelepre with the patronage of the Municipality, confirmed its role as a flagship event of Holy Week in the Metropolitan City of Palermo.
Montelepre is located about 30 km from Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A29 motorway (Carini or Partinico exit), continuing inland; by train, the reference station is Carini, which is then connected by local bus lines.
Participation is free. The event takes place in the historic center: it is advisable to arrive early to find a spot along the route and to park in the areas outside the village.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking along the narrow streets of the center. Given the influx of thousands of visitors, it is preferable to reach the town in the early afternoon.
