The historic procession of Triora towards Mount Forcarum
The Procession of the Mount is one of the oldest and most evocative religious rites of the Imperia hinterland. In Triora, in the upper Argentina valley, the procession originated from a vow by the Parliament of Triora in 1756, in gratitude to Providence for the end of a devastating infestation that threatened the crops and the local economy.
The heart of the procession is the statue of Our Lady of Mercy, a work by the Genoese sculptor Paolo Olivari created in the mid-19th century, weighing approximately 300 kg. Eight bearers take turns carrying it along the mountain path, accompanied by a 55 kg crucifix and the black cross of the hooded penitents of the Confraternity of the Good Death.
The procession culminates at Mount Forcarum, with the symbolic rite against pests and the blessing of the fields, perpetuating the original meaning of the vow. Organized by the Parish of Triora with the Confraternity of the Good Death, it is recognized as an Authentic Event of Liguria for its historical, religious, and cultural value.
The 260th edition of the Procession of the Mount was held on Sunday, April 19, 2026, the second Sunday after Easter. The day began with the 10:30 AM mass in the parish church of Triora.
This was followed by the procession towards Mount Forcarum: eight bearers took turns carrying the statue of Our Lady of Mercy (approx. 300 kg), accompanied by the 55 kg crucifix and the black cross of the penitents of the Confraternity of the Good Death. The rite of blessing the fields was renewed at Forcarum.
