The procession of the patron saint of the countryside through the cobbled streets of the medieval village of Erice
Suspended on the summit of Mount San Giuliano, over 750 meters above sea level, the medieval village of Erice preserves one of the religious traditions most cherished by its community: the procession of Saint Francis of Paola, venerated by the locals with the affectionate title of Santu Patri. In the heart of the province of Trapani, Sicily, this spring celebration draws faithful, bearers, and visitors along the characteristic cobbled streets of the historic center.
Unlike in Trapani, where Saint Francis of Paola is invoked primarily as the protector of seafarers, in Erice the Saint takes on an even broader significance: he is considered the patron saint of farm workers and the countryside. For this reason, his feast is linked to agricultural cycles and the seasons, intertwining the spiritual dimension with the rural life of the Agroericino territory.
The effigy carried in the procession is an exquisite 19th-century wooden work, attributed to the Erice master Pollina, embellished over time by numerous ex-votos, medals, and objects donated by the faithful as a sign of gratitude. The statue is housed in the Church of San Francesco di Paola, which stands next to the area of the ancient civic hospital of Erice, founded in 1330, near Porta Carmine.
The procession winds through the streets of the historic center until it reaches the evocative Balio Gardens, a panoramic terrace overlooking the surrounding landscape. Here, the most solemn moment takes place: the blessing of the lands, bestowed from several viewpoints facing the Agroericino countryside, the Gulf of Monte Cofano, and the city of Trapani. The procession is accompanied by the notes of the musical association, while the festival committee, volunteers, and bearers oversee the organization and transport of the statue.
The feast of Santu Patri represents much more than a religious appointment for Erice: it is a moment of community identity and the transmission of popular Erice traditions, renewed from generation to generation. Amidst the streets of the medieval village, through prayer, music, and popular participation, the procession confirms the deep bond between the community, its history, and its patron saint.
The 2026 edition of the procession of Saint Francis of Paola took place in Erice on Sunday, April 19, 2026. The statue of Santu Patri left the Church of San Francesco di Paola at 3:00 PM, near Porta Carmine, traveling through the cobbled streets of the historic center to return around 6:00 PM.
As per tradition, the procession reached the Balio Gardens, where blessings were bestowed upon the Agroericino countryside, the Gulf of Monte Cofano, and the city of Trapani. The departure of the statue was broadcast live on local social media channels starting at 2:50 PM.
Erice can be reached by car from Trapani along the provincial road that climbs to the village, or via the cable car that connects Trapani (Erice Casa Santa area) to the summit city. By train or plane, the reference hub is Trapani-Birgi Airport and the Trapani train station.
The procession takes place in April, on the occasion of the patron saint's feast. The statue leaves the Church of San Francesco di Paola, near Porta Carmine, in the afternoon to travel through the historic center with a stop at the Balio Gardens.
Entry to the procession is free. Comfortable footwear is recommended for the village's cobbled streets, as well as clothing suitable for the summit's climate, which is often cooler and windier than on the coast.
