The feast of the patron saint of seafarers in the heart of Messina
The Procession of Saint Francis of Paola is one of the most deeply felt religious traditions in Messina, a city in northeastern Sicily overlooking the Strait. Saint Francis of Paola, born in Calabria in 1416 and founder of the Order of Minims, is venerated as the patron saint of seafarers: the people of Messina, historically tied to the sea and navigation, consider him a special protector of sailors and fishermen. Pope Pius XII officially proclaimed him the patron saint of seafarers in 1943, cementing a bond that has much older roots in Messina.
The cult of the saint arrived in Messina as early as the 16th century, fostered by the geographical and cultural proximity to Calabria, the saint's birthplace. At the heart of this devotion lies the famous legend of the miracle of the Strait: according to tradition, after a boatman refused to take him across, the saint crossed the stretch of sea by walking on his cloak spread over the water. It is this episode that solidifies the bond between Francis and the city's maritime community.
The heart of the festival is the Diocesan Sanctuary of Saint Francis of Paola on Viale della Libertà, home to the parish of Santa Maria dell'Arco. The solemn procession of the statue departs from here, traveling through the parish streets accompanied by a brass band, confraternities, and a diverse crowd of faithful of all ages, amidst singing, prayers, and expressions of faith. Along the route, the procession makes symbolic stops at places dear to the community, such as Piazza Castronovo and the Ringo area.
The most evocative element of the festival is the sea procession on the Strait: the statue is loaded onto a ferry and taken across the waters separating Sicily from Calabria, with stops in front of the port's iconic landmarks. It is a moment of intense emotion that reaffirms the deep bond between the city, its saint, and the sea. The devotion involves the entire Messina community and represents a key identity-defining event in the religious calendar of the province of Messina.
On Sunday, April 19, 2026, Messina renewed its devotion to Saint Francis of Paola with the solemn procession of the statue. The parade departed from the Sanctuary on Viale della Libertà, traveling through the parish streets amidst hymns, prayers, and expressions of faith, accompanied by a brass band and a diverse group of citizens of all ages.
City confraternities, including the one dedicated to the saint, and members of the diocesan inter-confraternity center took part in the celebration. Along the route, the procession made symbolic stops at Piazza Castronovo and near the church of Gesù e Maria del Buon Viaggio in Ringo. The day was marked by a solemn mass presided over by Archbishop Giovanni Accolla, with a homily by the parish priest Father Luciano Zampetti, in an atmosphere of deep popular participation.
The procession starts at the Diocesan Sanctuary of Saint Francis of Paola, Viale della Libertà 127, Messina. The parade crosses the northern district of the city.
Messina is easily accessible by train (Messina Centrale station) and by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo and A18 Messina-Catania motorways. From Calabria, you can arrive via the ferries that cross the Strait. Viale della Libertà runs along the northern coast and is served by ATM urban transport and the city tram.
Participation in the procession and religious celebrations is free and open to the public.
