The Santa Maria della Lettera Patronal Feast is the most cherished religious and cultural event in Torre Faro, a fishing village located at the extreme tip of Capo Peloro, within the municipality of Messina, Sicily. Overlooking the Strait, facing the Calabrian coast, the village retains a strong maritime identity that merges with Marian devotion during the festival, creating one of the most distinctive celebrations in the Messina area.
The cult of the Madonna della Lettera is deeply rooted throughout the city of the Strait. According to tradition, in the 1st century, a delegation of Messinians converted to Christianity by Saint Paul received a letter of blessing from Mary, sealed with a lock of her hair and accompanied by the famous phrase ยซVos et ipsam Civitatem benedicimusยป. Since then, the Madonna della Lettera has been venerated as the patron saint of Messina; in Torre Faro, the community dedicates its patronal feast to her in the heart of summer, on the penultimate Sunday of August.
The symbolic moment of the festival is the nocturnal boat procession: about forty local fishing boats, decorated and lit by torches, parade at sea on the eve of the main procession, starting from the Pilone area and arriving in front of the Santa Maria della Lettera church. The lights reflecting on the waters of the Strait create a breathtaking scene, a path of devotion that the parish has often accompanied with artistic installations dedicated to the maritime trades and the village's seafaring culture.
For a few days, the festival transforms the quiet village into a vibrant hub of faith, music, and social life, attracting residents, vacationers, and visitors. For those spending the summer on the Capo Peloro peninsula, between the two lakes of Ganzirri and the beaches of the Strait, the Santa Maria della Lettera Feast is an opportunity to experience one of the most authentic traditions of the Messina coastline, where the bond between the community and the sea remains at the heart of every celebration.
The 2026 edition of the Santa Maria della Lettera Feast in Torre Faro is expected, as every year, in late August. At the moment, the Santa Maria della Lettera Parish has not yet released the official dates and detailed program. Based on established tradition, liturgical celebrations, the procession of the patron saint's statue, and the stunning procession of illuminated boats are expected. The program will be updated as soon as it is released by the organizers.
Torre Faro is located at the northern end of Messina, on the tip of Capo Peloro. By car, it can be reached via Viale della Libertร and the coastal road; it is also served by the ATM Messina urban bus network. The reference train station is Messina Centrale, from which you can continue via local public transport.
The festival takes place on the penultimate Sunday of August, with celebrations spread over the preceding days. The dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is recommended to check with the Santa Maria della Lettera Parish in Torre Faro.
Religious and popular events are open to the public and free of charge.
