The penitential ascent of the Virgin to the mountain sanctuary
Above Abriola, a village in the Lucanian Dolomites in the province of Potenza, stands the Sanctuary of Monteforte, dating back to the 11th-12th century. According to tradition, it was built where a fortified structure once stood, which later became a monastic hermitage and finally, in the 16th century, a chapel open to Marian worship. From that moment on, devotion to Our Lady of Monteforte became one of the cornerstones of Abriola's spirituality.
The statue of Our Lady never stays still throughout the year. During the winter months, it is kept in the Mother Church of Abriola; with the arrival of summer, it is carried in procession to the mountain sanctuary, where it remains until August 15th, the feast of the Assumption, when it descends back to the village. This double pilgrimage marks the devotional calendar of the community and symbolically signals the beginning and end of the summer season in the Lucanian mountains.
The ascent procession has a marked penitential character: some faithful walk the path barefoot and undergo periods of fasting. Ancient devotional gestures related to fertility also survive, testifying to a visceral link between spirituality, nature, and the earth's cycle that has characterized this rite for centuries. The uphill walk towards the sanctuary, immersed in the woods, is a moment of deep reflection.
In contrast, the descent procession on August 15th is a baroque-style celebration with a picturesque "devotional machine" carried on shoulders, awaiting Our Lady outside the sanctuary. The day concludes with festivities in the piazza that continue until late at night, amidst intense displays of popular devotion.
Organized with the coordination of the Municipality of Abriola, the procession of Our Lady of Monteforte is one of the most authentic expressions of Lucanian religiosity, where the sacred dialogues with the mountain and the ancient rhythms of the community.
The 2026 edition of the ascent procession is scheduled for Sunday, May 31st, as announced by Mayor Romano Triunfo. The day begins with Holy Mass in the Mother Church, followed by the procession accompanying the statue of Our Lady to the Sanctuary of Monteforte, where the Virgin will stay until August 15th.
The ascent retains its penitential and devotional character, a moment of reflection for the entire community of Abriola, which thus renews a centuries-old bond with its patron saint.
The religious program is coordinated by the municipal administration of Abriola.
How to get there: Abriola is about a 30-minute drive from Potenza (SS 407 Basentana and then provincial roads). The nearest train station is Potenza.
The sanctuary: the Sanctuary of Monteforte is reached from the village; the processional ascent is on foot along the path, which should be tackled with suitable footwear.
Admission: free religious event, open to all.
Tip: to fully experience the tradition, participate in both the late May ascent and the August 15th descent, two complementary facets of the same devotion.
