The nativity scene exhibition and competition at the Confraternita di Santa Croce in Beinette
Every winter, the Confraternita di Santa Croce in Beinette, in the province of Cuneo, transforms into a small gallery of the nativity. It is here, in the 17th-century church that locals affectionately call the "Crusà" (from the Piedmontese word for "cross"), that Presepi in Crusà comes to life: an exhibition and competition featuring dozens of handcrafted nativity scenes—some traditional, others mechanical, or reimagined with unusual materials—all handmade by local residents.
The initiative is more than just a display: it is a competition open to everyone, awarding the most beautiful nativity scenes each year across several categories—families, children, adults, schools, and catechism groups. Participation is free, which is the secret to its success: the nativity scenes are not built by professional artists, but by local families, kindergarten and primary school classes, associations, and individual enthusiasts. The awards ceremony, traditionally held on Epiphany, is the most anticipated moment and brings the entire Beinette community together.
The setting is an integral part of the event's charm. The Confraternita di Santa Croce, located at Via Roma 8, is one of the most cherished historical and religious buildings for the people of Beinette: its intimate aisles and atmosphere create the perfect backdrop for admiring the nativity scenes in the soft glow of Christmas lights. The exhibition is promoted by the Animators Group associated with the Confraternity, with the patronage of the Municipality of Beinette, and is part of the broader "Presepi in Granda" circuit, which highlights the many nativity displays across the province of Cuneo.
Open from the days leading up to Christmas until Epiphany, Presepi in Crusà is a perfect stop for those seeking an authentic, small-town Christmas in Piedmont, far from the large crowds. Admission is free, and a visit can easily be combined with a walk through the streets of Beinette and other nativity-themed itineraries in the Granda area. It is an opportunity to rediscover a tradition that continues to grow with every edition.
