About Saint Herculanus
Saint Herculanus, defensor civitatis
Along with Saint Constantius and Saint Lawrence, Saint Herculanus is one of the patrons of Perugia. Bishop and martyr, killed according to tradition during the Gothic siege of the city in the 6th century, he is venerated as defensor civitatis, defender of the community, and is also the patron of the University of Perugia. His dies natalis, meaning the day of his martyrdom, falls on November 7th.
A feast in the city's religious heart
The celebrations are concentrated on the weekend following November 7th and take place in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the evocative Church of Saint Herculanus, a Gothic jewel overlooking the steps leading down to Corso Cavour. The solemn masses, animated by city choirs such as the Madrigalisti di Perugia, are presided over by the Archbishop in the presence of civil and academic authorities and representatives of the Sodalizio di San Martino.
Memory and civic identity
The figure of Saint Herculanus remains deeply linked to the identity of Perugia and its university: defender of the city in times of siege, he is today a symbol of shared memory that unites the religious community, institutions, and the university world. A second celebration, the dies translationis, occurs on March 1st.

According to established custom, the program includes a solemn mass on Saturday and the main Eucharistic celebration on Sunday, presided over by the Archbishop and animated by a city choir, in the presence of civil and academic authorities and the Sodalizio di San Martino.
