The parade of floats and masquerades in the heart of the Peligna Valley
The Pratola Carnival is the major carnival celebration in the town of Pratola Peligna, located in the heart of the Peligna Valley in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo. Every year, in the period leading up to Shrove Tuesday, the streets and squares of the town fill with color, music, and joy for the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups, in a popular event that involves entire families, children, and groups of friends of all ages.
The floats and masks traditionally gather in Piazza Nazario Sauro in the early afternoon. From there, the procession begins, winding through the streets of the historic center amidst confetti, streamers, and music, concluding in Piazza Garibaldi, where the entertainment show and the float awards ceremony take place. The day continues with DJ sets, dancing, and entertainment until the evening, transforming the entire town into a large open-air stage.
The heart of the festival is the allegorical float competition, which every year features groups and associations that have spent months building increasingly elaborate floats inspired by current events, cinema, comics, and satire. A jury awards prizes to the most beautiful and creative floats and masks, also involving younger participants in dedicated categories. Participation is open, and the festival keeps the spirit of community and the carnival tradition of the Peligna territory alive.
The Pratola Carnival is organized with the involvement of local associations, including the Vivi Pratola Cultural Association and the Pro Loco, with the patronage and support of the municipal administration of Pratola Peligna. The event is free to attend and represents one of the most anticipated winter appointments in Abruzzo, capable of attracting audiences from across the entire Peligna Valley.
The 2026 Pratola Carnival was held on Sunday, February 15, in Pratola Peligna, organized by the Vivi Pratola Cultural Association in collaboration with the municipal administration led by Mayor Antonella Di Nino. The gathering of floats and masks took place at 2:30 PM in Piazza Nazario Sauro, followed by the parade through the town streets and the final show in Piazza Garibaldi, hosted by Roberto Ruggiero and Rosa Gargiulo, with DJ sets and dancing until the evening.
The float competition saw the triumph of the "Colpo al Louvre" (Heist at the Louvre) float, inspired by Lupin and comic book characters like the Beagle Boys; in second place was the "Alice in Wonderland" group, in third "Gli intoccabili" (The Untouchables, children aged 8-12), and in fourth "Ritorno al passato" (Back to the Past), dedicated to the 80s and 90s.
