The grand nocturnal parade of allegorical floats in the heart of the Turin Roero area
The Pralormo Carnival is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in this small town in the Province of Turin, located on the border between the Roero area and the plains, in a hilly region also famous for the spring tulip bloom at the Castle. The festival is organized by the Pro Loco of Pralormo with the support of the Municipality and has been one of the most beloved winter events in Piedmont for decades.
The parade of allegorical floats that winds through the town streets has its roots in the late 1970s and remains the beating heart of the event to this day. Over the years, Pralormo has built a network of collaborations with neighboring towns: its floats are regularly joined by those from Chieri, Poirino, Piobesi, Racconigi, and Nichelino, creating a procession that draws hundreds of participants and spectators from the entire southern area of Turin.
The most striking feature of the Pralormo Carnival is its nocturnal setting: the illuminated allegorical floats, accompanied by music, set off late in the evening from Via Quattro Venti and travel through the center to the heart of the town, amidst confetti, masks, and costumed groups. It is an unusual format compared to daytime carnivals, which gives the celebration a particularly scenic atmosphere.
The program goes beyond just the floats. The afternoon is dedicated to families, with a magic show hosted in the municipal gym, designed for both adults and children. In the evening, the Pro Loco's food stalls open, serving traditional Piedmontese peasant dishes: polenta, stew, fritters, crepes, sandwiches, and Carnival sweets. After the parade, the party continues with the Carnival Party, a free-entry masquerade party with a DJ set that keeps the gym buzzing until late at night.
More than just a local village festival, the Pralormo Carnival has become a reference point for the local conscripts and associations of neighboring towns, who prepare their own allegorical floats every year. The Friday preceding the parade is traditionally dedicated to welcoming the conscripts at the Town Hall, a sign of the strong bond between the event and the local Piedmontese community.
Pralormo is located in the Province of Turin, about 40 km from the regional capital, along the hills between Poirino and the Roero. By car, it can be reached from the A6 Turin-Savona motorway (Carmagnola exit) or via the provincial road from Chieri and Poirino. The nearest train station is in Poirino, on the Turin-Alessandria line.
The Carnival traditionally takes place on the Carnival weekend in late February. The nocturnal float parade is held on Saturday evening.
The street parade and outdoor activities are free. The evening Carnival Party in the gym is also free of charge; food stalls operate on a pay-per-item basis.
As this is an outdoor evening parade, warm clothing is recommended. Masks and costumes are welcome, especially for children.
