About Praiano Carnival

Every year, in the heart of the Amalfi Coast, the Praiano Carnival transforms the village alleys into an open-air stage. The masked parade starts from Belvedere Muriciello and reaches Piazza San Luca, accompanied by stilt walkers, jugglers, and fairytale characters, followed by a show blending magic and comedy. Free admission for all, young and old, with the scent of local migliaccio filling the air.

A Carnival overlooking the sea

The Praiano Carnival is the festival that brings the Amalfi Coast village to life in the heart of winter. In the town of Praiano, in the Province of Salerno (Campania), the stairways and alleys overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea become an open-air stage for an afternoon: masks, colors, music, and street performers accompany residents and visitors along the route through the town.

This is not a carnival of massive floats, but a community celebration tailored to the village. The intimate scale of Praiano, with just over two thousand inhabitants nestled between Monte Sant'Angelo a Tre Pizzi and the sea, makes the event particularly familiar and engaging: families take to the streets with children in costume, and the festivities unfold as you walk, without barriers or imposing stages.

From Belvedere Muriciello to Piazza San Luca

The highlight of the day is the masked parade, which kicks off in the early afternoon from Belvedere Muriciello and concludes in Piazza San Luca, in front of the parish church of San Luca Evangelista. It is a traveling procession: the audience doesn't just stand and watch, but walks along with the performers through the streets, with the Gulf and Capri serving as a natural backdrop.

Piazza San Luca, the true living room of Praiano with its majolica paving, hosts the final show and remains the meeting point for the entire afternoon. It is here that, at the end of the day, the party winds down amidst confetti, chatter, and seasonal sweets.

Street performers, magic, and clowning

The program focuses entirely on street performers: stilt walkers, jugglers, theatrical performers, and fairytale characters animate the procession, following a different theme each year. Upon arrival in the square, the main show takes place, featuring a guest artist: magic, illusionism, mime, quick-change acts, or clowning, with numbers designed to engage the audience rather than just having them applaud.

  • Masked parade from Belvedere Muriciello to Piazza San Luca
  • Stilt walkers, jugglers, and fairytale characters along the entire route
  • Open-air show with a guest artist (magic, illusionism, comedy)
  • Free admission to all events
  • In case of bad weather, the program will be rescheduled

Migliaccio, the flavor of the Praiano Carnival

Carnival in Praiano has a distinct flavor: that of migliaccio praianese, a specialty that local families prepare at this time of year. Unlike the semolina dessert found elsewhere in Campania, this is a hearty savory frittata made with mixed pasta, semolina, eggs, cheeses, sausage, and spices, baked in the oven and served in slices. In 2025, the tradition was celebrated with a contest open to anyone wishing to bring their own migliaccio to the square, confirming how central this recipe is to the town's identity.

A festival designed for families

The afternoon timing, free admission, and the use of non-verbal languages—circus, mime, magic—make the Praiano Carnival an event suitable for children and accessible to the many foreign guests staying on the coast out of season. No tickets or reservations are required: simply show up along the parade route a few minutes before it begins.

Praiano in winter, a different side of the Coast

Visiting Praiano in February or March means discovering an Amalfi Coast completely different from the peak season: accessible roads, quiet terraces, clear light over the sea, and more affordable prices. The Carnival is one of the few occasions when the village truly comes alive before spring, and it is a great excuse to combine the festival with a walk towards the Torre a Mare, a descent to the Praia beach, or a stretch of the Path of the Gods that starts just above the town.

Along with the events in Positano, Agerola, Tramonti, and other neighboring towns, the Praiano Carnival is part of a widespread calendar that brings masks and street performers to all the villages of the Salerno coast every year.

Praiano Carnival 2026

On Sunday, February 15, 2026, the center of Praiano, on the Amalfi Coast, transformed into an open-air stage for the most colorful event of the Praiano winter.

At 3:00 PM, the Carnival parade started from Belvedere Muriciello with the traveling show Le Fate Sognanti: fairies, stilt walkers, and jugglers accompanied the masked procession along the village streets to the church of San Luca, creating a fairytale atmosphere especially appreciated by children.

Following this, at 4:00 PM, it was time for Magic Variety, the one-man show by Vito La Sala: magic, mime, illusionism, juggling, and quick-change acts alternated in a show built on direct interaction with the audience. Admission, as per tradition, was free.

The organization, coordinated by the Praiano Tourist Information Office, had planned for the program to be postponed in case of bad weather. The day concluded with the delicious ritual of migliaccio praianese, the specialty that has always accompanied the Carnival period in the town of Praiano.
