The medieval palio of the Cadore villages, inspired by 1345
The Praemium Sancti Martini is the grand medieval historical re-enactment of Vigo di Cadore, in the province of Belluno. Set in the year 1345, it brings to life the atmosphere of late medieval Cadore, when the villages of the valley were bound by alliances and rivalries. For the occasion, the historic center dresses up for a festival with encampments, markets, and costumed participants.
The heart of the event is the Palio di San Martino, a village competition contested between the hamlets of Vigo, Laggio, Pelòs, Lozzo, and Lorenzago di Cadore. The challenge between the communities makes the re-enactment a moment of strong collective identity, in which each village fields its own groups and participants.
The re-enactment involves numerous thematic groups: guards, archers, drummers, artisans, commoners, nobles, and ladies. The costume parades animate the village streets, accompanied by the sound of drums and bagpipes, while artisans showcase ancient crafts. The event is curated by the Praemium Sancti Martini Association, which keeps the tradition alive in the Cadore region.
The Praemium Sancti Martini is expected on the first weekend of September 2026 in the historic center of Vigo di Cadore. The re-enactment, set in 1345, features costume parades, encampments, a medieval market, and the Palio di San Martino among the five villages of the valley.
The detailed program, with times for parades and competitions, will be published by the Praemium Sancti Martini Association in the weeks prior.
