Two evenings in Piazza San Rocco for the queen of the Molinara summer
The Potato Festival is the most anticipated summer event in Molinara, a village in the hilly Sannio hinterland in the province of Benevento (Campania). For two consecutive nights, Piazza San Rocco transforms into a large open-air dining hall. Potatoes grown in the surrounding countryside are served in numerous traditional peasant recipes, while the stage hosts live music and families occupy benches and chairs until late at night. This is not an event built for mass tourism, but a community celebration that the village prepares for weeks and to which emigrated Molinaresi gladly return.
The tuber is the true star. According to the organizers, "the specific characteristics of the local soil and climate give the Molinara potato a unique taste," enhanced by recipes passed down through generations. The potato, which was the staple of Sannio peasant families for decades, has become an element of identity: the festival was born precisely to tell its story, offer tastings, and remember how deeply the village's agricultural history is tied to it.
The festival menu revolves entirely around the potato, with dishes that in recent editions have included:
The kitchens are managed by Pro Loco volunteers and citizens who offer their help every year: portions are generous, and waiting times during the busiest evenings are simply part of the ritual.
Each evening features live music with local bands dedicated to folk and pop songs, often followed by a DJ set that keeps the square lively until late. In recent editions, inflatables for children have also been set up, making the festival a perfect evening for the whole family rather than just a gastronomic stop. Entry to the square is free: you only pay for the menu, and those who wish can simply stroll among the stands and enjoy the music.
The event is promoted by the Molinara Pro Loco Tourist Association in collaboration with the C.A.S.A. association and with the help of numerous volunteers. For the organizers, "the Potato Festival is much more than just a food event": it is a blend of local promotion, culinary culture, and social connection—three elements that, in a small inland town, are as valuable as the event itself.
The festival is always held around mid-August (Ferragosto), when the village reaches its peak summer population. Evenings generally start around 8:00 PM – 8:30 PM and continue until late. Those arriving from outside the province will find the inland Sannio area to be an off-the-beaten-path destination, full of hilly towns, olive groves, and scenic roads: the Molinara Potato Festival is a great opportunity to discover it from its most authentic side—that of a meal shared in the square.
The Potato Festival returns to Molinara (province of Benevento, Campania) on Monday, August 10, and Tuesday, August 11, 2026, once again in Piazza San Rocco. Two evenings dedicated to authentic flavors, conviviality, and local traditions, with the Molinara potato featured in numerous peasant-style dishes.
The initiative is promoted by the Molinara Pro Loco Tourist Association together with the C.A.S.A. association. As the organizers remind us, "the Potato Festival is much more than just a gastronomic feast": it combines local promotion, culinary culture, and social connection, attracting thousands of visitors to the small Sannio town over the two evenings each year.
The proven formula is confirmed for 2026: food stands managed by volunteers, open-air tables in the square, and live music on both nights. Details of the musical program and the final menu will be announced by the Pro Loco in the days leading up to the event via posters and social media channels.
Molinara is located in the inland Sannio area, in the province of Benevento. The most practical way to reach it is by car, starting from Benevento and following the provincial roads that cross the hilly villages. Public transport service to small towns is limited, especially in August and during the evening: it is best not to rely on buses for the return trip.
The entire festival is concentrated in Piazza San Rocco, in the town center. The streets of the center are narrow and closed to traffic during the event: it is advisable to arrive a little early and park on the outskirts of the town, then reach the square on foot.
Free entry to the square; the tasting menu is paid (15 euros per person in the 2025 edition, drink included). Payment is in cash at the stands: POS card terminals are not guaranteed.
