Two evenings of Sannio flavors and folk music in the Morcone Municipal Park
In Morcone, a village of just under five thousand inhabitants perched at an altitude of 680 meters in the Province of Benevento, summer has a name and a program that have been renewed for nearly seventy years: the Morcone Summer. Within this historic festival, the Festa al Borgo has quickly become the event that draws the largest crowds, usually around mid-August, when the Sannio region fills with returning emigrants and visitors seeking authentic celebrations. This is not an event manufactured for passing tourism; it is a festival that the people of Morcone organize for themselves, which is precisely why it works so well for those visiting from outside.
The Festa al Borgo did not appear out of thin air. It carries the legacy of Colori e Sapori d'altri tempi (Colors and Flavors of Yesteryear), the event that enlivened the alleys and stairways of the historic center for ten editions before a hiatus. When the Pro Loco Morcone APS decided to pick up the thread, they chose to move everything to the Municipal Park, the Tommaso Lombardi Park, while maintaining the original spirit: the promotion of traditional flavors and crafts. The choice of the park is no coincidence. It is the place where the community has always met, amidst evening strolls, chats, and leisure that have marked entire generations of Morcone residents: a shaded, flat space that is easy to enjoy with children or the elderly, much more accessible than the steep streets of the old town.
The festival route winds through local gastronomy and street food stalls, stands featuring typical products of the area, craft displays, and small curiosities related to the material culture of Sannio. It is the most direct way to understand the cuisine of this part of inland Campania, which is very different from the Neapolitan coastal tradition: handmade pasta, meats, cheeses, cured meats, vegetables, and preserves from a mid-mountain area, with dishes passed down through homes and served here in a street-food format. In recent years, the Pro Loco has involved a growing number of local businesses, with the direct participation of bars, restaurants, and producers: a choice that has turned the festival into a collective effort of the Municipality of Morcone rather than the initiative of a single association.
Each evening has its own musical identity, with free live performances in the park. The repertoire looks to the traditions of the South: on one hand, classic Neapolitan songs, and on the other, the sounds of folk music with pizzica, tammurriata, and tarantellaโthe kind that gets people up from their chairs in Morcone and neighboring towns. In previous editions, the program has also hosted DJ sets, street performers, and theatrical moments, in a deliberately mixed formula that brings together grandparents and twenty-somethings in the same space.
The festival includes an animation area dedicated to children, with activities and entertainment designed for the little ones. It is a detail that makes a difference: it allows families to stay late without rushing and transforms the evenings into a kind of large, shared courtyard. This is also why the Festa al Borgo is one of the best opportunities to visit Morcone in August with your children.
Morcone is known as one of the gateways to the Matese: an ancient village with houses clustered along the hillside, best viewed from a distance, when the town looks like a single block of stone and roofs. The municipal territory is vast and includes dozens of hamlets and districts, from Cuffiano to Selvapiana, from Piana to Morcone Scalo, a testament to a widespread rural history. Those arriving for the festival can therefore extend their visit to the historic center, its alleys, and the panoramic viewpoints over the valley, capturing the contrast between the postcard-perfect Campania and this inland, quieter, and more Apennine version.
The 2026 edition is part of the 69th Morcone Summer program, published at the end of July by the Municipal Administration together with local associations. The Pro Loco Morcone APS, led by president Marzio Cirelli, has announced a particularly strong response from local businesses, which are participating in greater numbers this year than in the past; to raise the organizational level, the Pro Loco has also relied on professional collaborators for event management.
The formula remains the one that has worked: the Tommaso Lombardi Park becomes an open-air stage, with the stall route winding through the greenery of the Municipal Park and folk music providing the soundtrack for the two evenings. Admission is free.
Detailed schedules and the names of guest groups are released by the Pro Loco Morcone APS in the days immediately preceding the event.
The entire event is concentrated in the Municipal Park of Morcone, the Tommaso Lombardi Park, just a short walk from the town center. The area is flat and shaded, making it convenient even with strollers.
Morcone is located in the Sannio area of Benevento, at an altitude of 680 meters, and is easily reached by car. On festival evenings, it is advisable to arrive early: parking spaces near the Municipal Park fill up quickly, and you may need to park further uphill in the town streets.
The stalls open in the evening and activities continue until late at night. Admission is free, including musical performances: you only pay for what you consume at the stalls.
