About Potato Festival

The Canale Monterano Potato Festival is the food and wine event that brings Piazza del Campo to life every June, in the heart of the village overlooking the Monterano Regional Nature Reserve. For three evenings, the potato takes center stage: fried, roasted, or served with gnocchi, accompanied by craft beers and live music. Organized by the Pro Loco, the festival combines simple, authentic cuisine with the convivial atmosphere of one of the most charming villages in the province of Rome, during an early summer weekend dedicated to taste and tradition.

The potato festival in the village of Canale Monterano

Every year, as summer arrives, the historic center of Canale Monterano, in the province of Rome, transforms into a large festive space dedicated to one of the most beloved and versatile ingredients of popular cuisine: the potato. The Potato Festival takes place in Piazza del Campo, the heart of the village, and attracts locals and visitors from neighboring towns for three evenings in a relaxed, convivial atmosphere that has become a consolidated tradition in the Lazio summer calendar.

A dive into flavor: potatoes in all forms

The undisputed star of the festival is, of course, the potato, offered in many local culinary variations. The food stands set up by the Pro Loco serve simple yet flavorful dishes every evening, designed to showcase the authenticity of country-style dining.

  • Fried potatoes, crispy and golden
  • Roasted potatoes, slow-cooked and fragrant
  • Traditional potato gnocchi, the festival's signature dish
  • Selected craft beers to accompany the tastings

The format is typical of village festivals: affordable prices, generous portions, and the chance to dine outdoors, seated at tables set up in the square, immersed in the village atmosphere.

Live music and conviviality

Each evening is enlivened by live musical performances, which accompany dinner and turn Piazza del Campo into a meeting point for all ages. Concerts, local bands, and folk music create the festive, family-friendly atmosphere that is the true hallmark of the event, where the pleasure of good food blends with the joy of being together.

Canale Monterano and the Monterano Reserve

The festival is also an excellent opportunity to discover Canale Monterano, a small town in Lazio located between the Tolfa Mountains and Lake Bracciano, about 50 kilometers northwest of Rome. The territory is protected by the Monterano Regional Nature Reserve, an area of great naturalistic value crossed by the Mignone River, where dozens of animal and plant species coexist. A short walk from the town center are the evocative ruins of ancient Monterano, the famous ghost village with the Lion Fountain and works linked to the genius of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, an ideal destination for a walk before or after the festival.

A Pro Loco event for the whole community

The Potato Festival is organized by the Pro Loco Association of Canale Monterano, with the patronage of the Municipality of Canale Monterano, the Monterano Regional Nature Reserve, and the Lazio Region. Admission is free, in the true spirit of a popular festival open to residents and tourists. For those visiting Lazio in search of authenticity, it is the perfect occasion to experience an evening of taste and cheer in one of the most characteristic villages in the province of Rome.
