About Potato Festival

Every last weekend of August, Barisciano—a small town on the Navelli plateau in the province of L'Aquila—celebrates its Potato Festival, one of the most beloved culinary events in inland Abruzzo. Established in 1980 to promote the renowned high-altitude mountain potato, the festival transforms Piazza del Mercato into a large open-air kitchen, where the community prepares gnocchi with sauce, potatoes with salt cod, sheep stew (pecora alla cottora), and zeppole. Live music and dance evenings round out this authentic village celebration, which also offers gluten-free menu options.

A festival with the scent of the mountains

For over forty years, the Potato Festival in Barisciano has been the quintessential late-summer event for this small Abruzzese town perched on the Navelli plateau, in the province of L'Aquila. Every last weekend of August, Piazza del Mercato comes alive with food stalls, the aroma of frying, and music: it is the celebration with which the village bids farewell to summer and honors its most iconic product, the potato grown at high altitude on the slopes of the Gran Sasso.

The Barisciano potato, a high-altitude excellence

The festival was founded in 1980 with a clear goal: to revalue the Barisciano potato and reconnect the community with its farming heritage. For generations, this tuber was a staple food for mountain families. The historic varieties grown at altitude, known locally as turche and fiocco di neve, benefit from the cool, breezy climate that discourages pests, resulting in a larger, tastier product grown without the need for pesticides.

Traditional dishes

The heart of the event is the kitchen, managed by a large group of volunteers that involves about two hundred people each year. Signature dishes include:

  • Potato gnocchi with sausage sauce, the true stars of the festival;
  • Potatoes and salt cod, which require a long and patient preparation;
  • Pecora alla cottora (slow-cooked sheep stew) with potatoes, a symbol of Abruzzese pastoral cuisine;
  • French fries, zeppole, and fried pizza for a sweet finish.

Special attention is given to celiac visitors: for years, there has been a dedicated gluten-free menu area, created in collaboration with AIC Abruzzo, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the festivities.

Music and evenings under the stars

Alongside the gastronomy, the Potato Festival offers a rich array of entertainment: ballroom orchestras, dance evenings, and music for younger crowds animate the square until late at night. It is the perfect occasion to gather, dance, and experience the warm, convivial atmosphere of the Abruzzo Apennine villages.

Organization and community roots

The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Barisciano, with the historical involvement of local groups such as the Alpini Association, the Ski Club, and the local sports club. This choral effort, where the entire community participates in the preparations, is what makes the festival one of the most heartfelt and authentic in the L'Aquila area, in Abruzzo.

Potato Festival — edition 2026

The official dates for the 2026 edition of the Barisciano Potato Festival have not yet been announced. Historically, the event takes place on the last weekend of August in Piazza del Mercato, organized by the Pro Loco of Barisciano. The usual gastronomic offering based on mountain potatoes—gnocchi, potatoes and salt cod, sheep stew—is expected, accompanied by live music and dance evenings, with a menu dedicated to celiac visitors.

At the moment, the Pro Loco of Barisciano has not yet announced the official dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Potato Festival.
